Feb. 12, 2015

We're all about language and literacy this week, as we learn new phrases and travel to new places. There are "hellos" and "bon voyages," warmest welcomes, and a very special visit from a real live police officer!

Of course, March is right around the corner and Buddings is a great option for families who's regular care providers are taking some time off. With as little as one hour's notice, and guaranteed spots with 2 days notice, we're excited to welcome some short stay families! Our newest teacher Setareh is starting this week, so we'll be all trained up and ready for all the adventures.

We haven't forgotten that it's Valentine's Day. Red, white, and pink are the colours of the week, and we'll be making heart-shaped cookies, cards, and creations. Stop in for some Saturday-care to see the results!

There's a lot to cover this week, so without further ado...
Let's get to it!

A Week in the World! Big Kids Club Camps!

As March rolls up, daycares around the city are posting their spring break schedules, and parents of preschoolers and toddlers find themselves without care for the week.

It's a great time for a Big Kids Club adventure! While other daycares have regular routine, our dynamic program offers a different experience every day! A week at Buddings is like a holiday for the holidays, with fieldtrips and friends, in a licensed program and centre, available when you need it! Check our site for info about short stays and emergency care

Last Thursday, Sarah and the Alphabet Adventurers made a quick trip down to Vancouver's own Kidsbooks on West Broadway, for a storytime with owner Phyllis Simon. The boys had a blast, and Sarah will have her blog post on our facebook page later this week.

No Extra Cost for Members!

The Big Kids Club winter season runs until Mar. 27, so there are still lots of chances to join the fun! Attendance is flexible, but kids who come every week definitely get to build on what they've already learned. There's no extra cost. Just make sure to book from 1 - 4pm.

Jen's been talking about Community Helpers this week, and next Wednesday, the kids in our newest program, Part of the Neighbourhood, will be hosting Const. Paul Hogan and his police cruiser! They've been preparing questions, and we are all hoping he'll talk about the sirens... and safety.

Johanna's Culture and Food class is exploring some creation myths, and after creating their own sun to warm and wake the world, they'll be visiting our favourite animal world, Aquariums West!

Welcome to Setareh!

The hunt for our summer student and marketing intern continues, but in the meantime, we're super excited to introduce three new faces popping up this Spring.

Warmest welcomes to our new floor teacher, Setareh. She's recently graduated from Capilano University and will be joining Sarah and the morning teachers on the floor shifts, and filling in for some upcoming holidays.

Setareh is passionate about film, which is a fun new interest among the Buddings crew, and one we've been really interested to pursue. She's just getting started in her ECE career, though, and you'll be seeing a lot of her over the next few weeks as she puts in some training hours, and gets herself situated.

She's really nice. Say "hello!"

The Welcomes Keep Coming! And "Aloha, see you soon!"

Further "hellos" and welcomes go out to Duncan Geiser, and Miyuki Takahashi. The former is an admin assistant with ECE ambitions, and the latter is a talented and experienced educator and substitute.

Together, they are a pair of stop-gap super heros who, without yet having met, are combining forces to help Talia get some administrative systems in place, and keep the floor running smoothly for the rest of the month...

...while Jen and Talia take some time off... (What?? Can they do that??)

It's "aloha" in Jen's case, for 10 days in sunny Hawaii. She flies out today and we don't know how to say "see you soon, and have a great trip," but she'll be back before we know it, all tanned up and ready for the rest of our winter season.

Her Big Kids Club classes are being covered by our in-house team, with extra special support from Miyuki for the next two Mondays and a Wednesday.

Talia is also heading to the beach for a week at the end of the month, to visit her family and friends in beautiful Barbados. Her floor shifts are being covered, and she'll be available by email. If responses are a bit slower than usual, don't worry, it's called "island time..."
What's Happening with Denet: con't...

We told you last week about our excellent educator Denet, and how we've been waiting to hear if/when we'll be allowed to have her back at Buddings. We have our hopes up, and our fingers crossed, but realistically, it doesn't look like she'll be back before May.

Living in Canada is a dream come true for Denet, and one she wants to continue. Given the two-month wait, though, she's decided to take a break from the bureaucratically enforced limbo to do some traveling of her own.

It's "a'right then," and "cheerio," as she heads to jolly old England for a few weeks, to see her charming man, who's doing his Masters in Manchester.

The pair have plans for a life in Canada, and are waiting for word with the rest of us. If the answer is positive, we'll see her in May. We'll keep you posted.
