What's Happening at the Library?
April is National Poetry Month
April is National Poetry Month and this year marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of the annual celebration!

National Poetry Month was initiated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996 to create awareness that poets “have an integral role to play in our culture and that poetry matters” (poets.org). The Academy of American Poets has numerous resources and ideas to help celebrate! Check them out at poets.org/nation-poetry-month!
One of the great many ways to participate in the poetry fun is to enjoy Poem in Your Pocket Day! Although the official Poem in Your Pocket Day is April 29 this year, you can do these things anytime while social distancing! First, you could share a poem on social media with the hashtag #PocketPoem. You could also email a poem to your friends and family. You could record yourself reading a poem and share it on social media. You could even read a poem aloud to your neighborhood from your porch, front yard, or even out your window!

Another way to participate in National Poetry Month is by borrowing a book of poems from, you guessed it, your library! Here are just a few contemporary poetry books that the Cheboygan Area Public Library offers: Words Like Thunder by Lois Beardslee (2021 Michigan Notable Book), The Cold and the Rust by Emily Van Kley, Scribbled in the Dark by Charles Simic, Breathe and Be by Kate Coombs, The Sun and Her Flowers by Rupi Kaur, and Love That Dog by Sharon Creech.
