Tips for the Holidays

As we enter this beautiful time of year in celebration of Thanksgiving which then leads us into Advent and Christmas, most of us are struggling with a very different type of celebration in 2020. Though many of us will be unable to share these joyous times in our normal family gatherings, let’s look at what we can do for ourselves and our families to enjoy and celebrate these wonderful occasions.

  • First, take time to allow yourself to grieve the loss of your traditions this year. It’s okay to acknowledge you are sad, disappointed, angry over this change.
  • Talk openly (and listen) to your family, spouse, friends, children as they are all feeling the same and talking about it releases these feelings, allowing you to move on.
  • Take time to exercise, read, take walks and enjoy nature, listen to music.

More New Tomorrows!

In honor of November being National Family Caregiver's Month, we are sharing Gina's story below. Check out other inspiring videos located on the "New Tomorrows" Stories page of our website. Please help us share the work we do by sharing our video and upcoming marketing blasts on Facebook with your friends and family or just talking with others to raise awareness of our services and programs available in our community.

We need YOUR help to share the professional services and programs available in our community!
If you are the caregiver of someone with dementia, or know someone who is, we are here to help! LCCC offers FREE Caregiver Support Meetings from 4:30 to 6:00 PM on the 1st Tuesday and 3rd Wednesday of every month. Currently meetings are being held via Zoom. Please contact Suzi Snyder at suzi@livingstoncatholiccharities.org to receive the login link.

Did You Know...

With the 2020 CARES Act, if you donate up to $300 in cash to qualifying organizations, your adjusted gross income will be reduced up to $300 (total whether filing joint or individual).

The Cares Act also temporarily suspends the limits on charitable contributions for those who do itemize. This means you can deduct up to 100% of your adjusted gross income, shared Kiplinger magazine.

Kiplinger also notes, the CARES Act has also increased the amounts of annual charitable deductions for corporations from 10% of taxable income to 25%. Any donations that are greater than 25% can be deducted within the following five years.

The IRA Charitable Rollover for persons 70.5 years allows you to rollover up to $100,000 (plus $100,000 from a spouse's IRA) as a qualified charitable distribution without having to recognize it as income.

Please discuss these opportunities with your accountant, IRA manager or visit the IRS official website to learn more.
Exciting News!

Livingston County Catholic Charities has been named a Top Workplace in Detroit! The award is based solely on the feedback of employees and we are honored to have been ranked 37th in the 2020 Small Top Workplaces winners.

“We have a tremendous group of coworkers and board members here at Livingston County Catholic Charities. Collectively, we support our mission to serve the un-served, under-served and vulnerable in our community,” said Mark Robinson, LCCC executive director.

BOGADS is on the GROW!

Since the State and CDC guidelines have limited the number of Guests LCCC can serve, we decided to remove the wall between the two largest group rooms at Be Our Guest Adult Day. This will allow LCCC to serve an additional five Guests while maintaining social distancing.

THANK YOU Schafer Construction and Oakland Commercial Construction for the professional and speedy work!
Hello from Special Ministries!

As we all know this year has been an extremely crazy one. We have been unable to hold many favorite activities for our Friends. So.... since we cannot hold our most favorite Holiday Party of the year in person, all of us at Special Ministries are partnering with our friends at Work Skills, CIL and others to bring Christmas to you!

Santa and his wonderful crew will be bringing Christmas Joy to families all over Livingston County. Delivery day of all party supplies will be December 23rd and the 24th - thanks to our friends at LETS.

On December 28th (Party Day!) from 5:00-8:00 PM we will be hosting a Zoom Christmas Celebration for all our Friends to join in, visit with each other, build a gingerbread house, fun crafts and more! Wear your festive clothing!

This Christmas Celebration is sponsored by our Friends at DTE Energy who are providing the snacks, gingerbread houses, a delicious lunch and more! Thanks to our friends at St. Patrick Church for all of the wonderful Christmas gifts donated for our participants.

REGISTER today so we can make sure to have enough gingerbread house kits, snacks, etc. Contact Amanda Miller at amandam@livingstoncatholiccharities.org.

We hope you all have a Safe and Blessed Holiday season and we look forward to seeing everyone’s smiling faces! We Love and Miss you all!

Keep checking our Facebook page and the Special Ministries page of the LCCC website for the latest events!
CHRISTMAS BLESSING PROJECT
For Home-bound/Low Income Seniors

As we enter this blessed season of love and joy, please help us remember our seniors by considering a donation to this wonderful event for our county seniors in need.

Please visit the Amazon Wish List or consider hosting a drive for one of the items listed or make a personal donation to support this heart-warming project. Our seniors feel forgotten and lonely this time of year. Let’s wrap them in love and bring hope & help during this blessed time of year.

Negative Impacts of Marijuana Use
Statistics provided by the IPC Cannabis Michigan Report pgs. 48-52.

In Michigan, 56.4% of people with a medical card reported driving within 2 hours of cannabis use, 50.5% reported driving while being “a little high”, and 21.1% reported driving while feeling “very high.”

The percentage of cannabis-involved fatal crashes has been increasing in Michigan, underscoring the need for public health approaches to prevent operating vehicles under the influence of cannabis.

According to University of Michigan Injury Prevention Center Report, Impact of Recreational Cannabis Legalization in Michigan: A Baseline Report, opioid overdose deaths have been increasing in Michigan during the same time period as cannabis use is increasing. Marijuana is not helping to reduce the impact of opioids on our community.

These are just some of the reasons why the work of the Livingston County Community Alliance (LCCA) is so important in our community!
