Be Our Guest Garden Receives Enhancements

We are very thankful to have received a $1,000 grant, for Be Our Guest Adult Service, from the Livingston County Consortium on Aging. The grant covered recently purchased supplies. Our Guests are already enjoying the garden, picking and eating tomatoes, and caring for the flowers they planted.

The accessible raised garden beds create meaningful opportunities for our Guests to remain physically active through gardening tasks like planting, watering, and harvesting. Enhancing the outdoor space has contributed to the participants' overall well-being and helps to reduce stress. This garden space provides a lasting resource that supports the health, dignity, and independence of our Livingston County seniors.

September is Suicide Prevention Month

In the U.S., suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people ages 10-14 and among people ages 15-24, and the 11th leading cause of death overall.

Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or background. In fact, suicide is often the result of an untreated mental health condition. Suicidal thoughts, although common, should not be considered normal and often indicate more serious issues.

OPEN ENROLLMENT for Medicare’s Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D) starts 10/15/2026 – 12/7/2026 with coverage starting 1/1/2027. It is important to re-evaluate your current coverage to make sure that you are still in the appropriate plan for your current situation. This is also a good time to see what changes your current plan may have for 2025 (increased premium, medications not covered or have a higher co-pay, etc.)

Some people may qualify for extra help such as lower or no premiums for their prescription coverage and lower co-pays or no co-pays for their medications. Ask your MMAP counselor to see if you qualify.

"I’m incredibly grateful for Beth Newman at Catholic Charities. She helps me every year with my mom’s Medicare Part D plan, and she does it with genuine kindness and caring. Beth makes a confusing process easy and always treats us with such warmth. She is truly special!"

Back-to-School Starts: Making Room for Big Feelings

The start of a new school year can bring a lot of excitement—but it can also bring big feelings for children and teens. A new classroom, new teacher, changing friendships, academic expectations, and the pressure to fit in can feel overwhelming, even when a child is happy to be back at school.

As parents and caregivers, it can be tempting to jump right into problem-solving when a child is upset. Instead, try making space for the feeling first. Simple responses such as, “That sounds really frustrating,” “I’m glad you told me,” or “That must have been hard,” let children know that their feelings are heard and that they don't have to face them alone. Feeling understood can help a child calm down enough to talk about what they need next.

As we begin another school year, let’s remember that feelings come before fixing. We don't have to have all the answers right away. Sometimes the most helpful thing we can offer is a listening ear, a safe place to talk, and the reassurance that big feelings are okay.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

At Livingston County Catholic Charities, we believe every child and family deserves support, understanding, and a safe place to work through life's challenges. As the school year begins, let's remind our children that whatever they are feeling, they don't have to carry it alone. Our therapists are ready to help your children, includung 2 dedicted Play Therapists, call 517-545-5944 to make an appointment today.
