Academic Excellence Secures a Brighter Future For All
Charmaine Mullins Jaime Ph.D., CSP, CRSP, Indiana State University
Dear Safety, Health, and Environmental Students,

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year!

I’d like to personally thank you for pursuing the safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) field of study. As an industry, the world needs dedicated safety and environmental health professionals to drive progress in making industry and communities safer. Your work is especially important now more than ever amidst global challenges and uncertainties related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The changing nature of work and the ever-advancing use of technology will continue to define your future as a safety professional.

As the safety leaders of tomorrow, I encourage you to equip your toolbox with everything you are learning in school and make sure to leave room for your values, your passions, and your creativity. When presented with challenges, let your values and what you’ve learned about risk management and the hierarchy of controls guide you. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box, as many safety issues that persist are a result of not challenging the norm!

Try to learn new things every day and keep up with the advances in safety. Organizations such as the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH), and the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) are there to help you through advances in the industry with SH&E certifications and memberships. These organizations are great tools to network and help you grow in your chosen field.

Remember, your importance as safety professionals cannot be understated. What you learn this year may save a life in the future!

Best wishes for the school year!

Education is the Greatest Tool Against Injuries to Youth in the Workplace
Approximately every five minutes a worker between the ages of 15-19 is sent to the emergency room due to a workplace injury.

We can prevent these injuries! Join the BCSP Foundation in our quest to eradicate workplace injuries to young workers through the development of the Youth Safety Institute: Jumpstart to Safety.

Turning Research to Practice With SHIFT
We are extremely excited to introduce you to SHIFT: Global EHS Research to Practice—a new peer-reviewed Journal created by the BCSP Foundation!

SHIFT emerged from BCSP and the BCSP Foundation’s shared commitment to drive necessary and powerful change in the environmental, health, and safety (EHS) industry.

At its core, SHIFT strives to provide opportunities for voices to be heard and research to be cultivated, dispersed, and developed into action.

What sets SHIFT apart is our dedication to moving research into practice. We will advance the EHS industry by expanding the field of study and creating straightforward, actionable guidelines that can be transferred into daily practice.

We are also happy to introduce Dr. Luz S. Marín as the Editor in Chief of SHIFT. Dr. Marín is an associate professor in the Department of Safety Sciences at the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
