Greetings!
November activities celebrate the fall and Thanksgiving season and begin the anticipation of the holidays. And, of course, it's time to honor our Veterans! I hope you have a great month and find some fun things to do in Greenville. Here's rundown of what's happening.
Since I'm getting this out a bit early, I want to remind everyone of the options for safe Halloween activities and trick or treating this year, too.
And please, please remember to Shop Small and support our locally-owned retail businesses and restaurants. They need our help more than ever!

The Wall That Heals to be in Sulphur Springs November 4-7
When I find something of interest nearby, I like to share that, and this is one: The Wall That Heals, a three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial along with a mobile Education Center, will be in Sulphur Springs on from November 4-7, 2021 at the Sulphur Springs High School Track, 1210 Houston Street. The free exhibit will be open 24 hours a day through 2 pm on Sunday, Nov. 7th. The Wall That Heals honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed forces in the Vietnam War and it bears the names of the 58,279 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. It is transported from community to community in a 53-foot trailer that opens with exhibits built into its sides, allowing it to serve as a mobile Education Center telling the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall and the divisive era in American history. The three-quarter scale Wall replica is 375 feet in length and stands 7.5 feet high at its tallest point. Visitors will experience The Wall rising above them as they walk towards the apex, a key feature of the design of The Wall in D.C. Visitors are able to do name rubbings of individual service member’s names on The Wall. The mobile Education Center exhibit includes: digital photo displays of “Hometown Heroes” - service members whose names are on The Wall that list their home of record within the area of a visit; digital photo displays of Vietnam veterans from the local area honored through VVMF’s In Memory program which honors veterans who returned home from Vietnam and later died as a result of their service; video displays that teach about the history and impact of The Wall; educational exhibits told through items representative of those left at The Wall in D.C.; a replica of the In Memory plaque; a map of Vietnam and a chronological overview of the Vietnam War.

The Theatre Department at Texas A&M Commerce presents the play "IN THE WEST" November 16-20 at the Performing Arts Center, Main Stage Theatre, 2101 University Drive, Commerce, TX 75428. Inspired by Richard Avedon's ground-breaking photo exhibit on the American West, which premiered in Fort Worth in 1985, a group of Texas writers became determined to create a play with Western characters from their own unique and individual viewpoints. The resulting script, In the West, is a monologue play about Texans (and “those thereabouts”): The people who make us laugh, the people who make us cry, the people who just plain perplex us… and the people who remind us that we are not alone. Y’all won’t want to miss it! Tickets $3-$15 are available at this link.
In addition, there are lots of free concerts and recitals going on all the time at TAMU-C, including their upcoming holiday concerts. You can find a list at this link.

Hunt County Shared Ministries has lots of ways to help!
It's the time of the year when Hunt County Shared Ministries (FISH) is working their hardest to not only keep the food pantry open every day, but also to provide food for a special Thanksgiving and Christmas meal for about 1500 needy Hunt County families through their November-December "Hunt County Gives" program. There are several ways you can help:
You can keep up with information about this and other "Hunt County Gives" holiday food drives at the FISH Facebook page.
HERALD BANNER FOOD DRIVE: The Annual Herald Banner Food Drive will take place from November 1 – 29th. You can bring non-perishable food, monetary donations or grocery store gift cards to either the Herald Banner offices at 2305 King Street or the Hunt County Shared Ministries office at 2805 King Street (be sure they know it’s for the Herald Banner Food Drive). FISH will purchase what they can from the North Texas Food Bank for the Thanksgivng and Christmas food boxes, but every food pantry in the area is trying to get the same things, so items from this list are really appreciated. Here’s what goes into each family’s food box: Canned Goods: 3 Green Beans, 3 Corn, 3 Baked Beans, 3 Potatoes, 3 Sweet Potatoes/Yams, 2 Pumpkin, 1 Cranberry Sauce, 2 Pet Milk or other brands. Dry Goods: 2 boxes or bags Stuffing, 2 Macaroni & Cheese, 1-2lb bag Rice, 1-2lb Pinto Beans, 1-5lb Flour, 1-5lb Sugar, 1 box of Instant Potatoes, 1 to 2 boxes of Cake Mixes & 2 cans of Frosting. Fresh Food: Each family will also be receiving fresh produce to include an assortment of vegetables and fruit from the North Texas Food Bank and eggs, butter and milk.
FRIENDLEE'S THANKSGIVING DURKEY DRIVE: Help make sure every family on the list has a turkey by participating in Friendlee's annual drive between November 1st and 19th. You can buy a turkey or a gift card that can be used to purchase one at either Brookshires or Super One. Please don’t bring whole frozen turkeys to the HCSM offices – they don’t have the freezer space! Donations or gift cards are welcome! Friendlee and Wally, the FISH director, will be at Brookshires on November 19th from 10 am till 1:00 pm for a final day of collection and announcement of total turkeys donated.

FOOD BOX PACKING NIGHTS: November 16, 17 & 18 (Tues, Wed and Thu of the week before Thanksgiving), Hunt County Shared Ministries (FISH) has their annual Thanksgiving Food Basket Assembly from 5:30 - 7:00 pm, and they are looking for volunteers each night to assemble hundreds of baskets for needy families. It's three evenings of fun and joyous work! Church groups, businesses, high school students needing community service hours - all are welcome! The work takes place on the loading docks of the GEUS Administrative Office at 2810 Wesley St., near Downtown Greenville. Because there are often so many volunteers (what a happy problem to have), FISH is asking that you contact, call Adam Beene at 903-455-0545 or email: ajbeene@hcsmfish.org to sign up for one of the evenings. It will help so much to have a plan for getting the assembly done in a smooth manner.

Coming December Events - Get Your Tickets Now!

COMMUNITY SEEDS HOLIDAY DINNER - One of my favorite holiday events for many years has been the Community Seeds Christmas Banquet. This year, they're planning a drive through Christmas drive-through on Thursday, December 2nd, at Wesley UMC. You will enter off the Moulton Street/Business Hwy 69 side of the property, drive through to pick up your meal and exit on the Joe Ramsey Blvd. side. The event will feature the Lights of Advent, a live Nativity, GCS Carolers and Mr. & Mrs. Claus. But the BEST part of this is that you can still purchase your tickets for the amazing Prime Rib Dinner with all the trimmings and peach cobbler for dessert - which will be delivered to your car for take-home dining. Tickets for the dinner are $75 and sold only in advance. You can order yours at this link. You'll get an amazing meal (best prime rib I've ever eaten) while you support a remarkable organization. Proceeds from this dinner benefit the poor, homeless and under-served of Hunt and Rains Counties.
