Nevada Builders Members,
Monday, June 2nd marked the end of the 83rd legislative session. Right now, the legislative counsel bureau is working to draft the final version of bills, and the Governor is either signing or vetoing bills that come across his desk. We’ve included some highlights of the wins our organization was able to secure for our members below.
While some bills were successfully blocked and others advanced with critical industry protections, one we are still monitoring is SB260 and AB444. The first bill would directed OSHA to create regulations that would require contractors to monitor and document air quality on jobsites, train employees, and develop formal communication systems based on vague thresholds and evolving state interpretations. After leading many conversations with colleagues and lawmakers, as well as testifying in opposition, our members have sent numerous veto requests to the Governor. The Nevada Builders Alliance has led the opposition to SB260.
AB444 is a bill NBA was instrumental on along with Minority Leader Gregory Hafen. The bill requires state agencies to notify trade associations (like NBA) and chambers of commerce if a proposed regulation will impact small businesses. While we expect AB444 to be signed into law, the veto and passage of these bills were a direct result of NBA’s sustained advocacy and the tireless work of our Government Affairs Committee and partners at Argentum.
This session has provided us with several wins for our industry and members. It also showed us the need for small contractors to get politically engaged so that our seat at the table remains strong. If you, your staff, your friends, or your family live in a swing district, reach out to NBA staff—we need to identify and back candidates now, so we don’t end up on defense again in two years.
