Stay Grounded: Fall Protection on the Jobsite
Falls are the leading cause of death in construction — but they’re also one of the easiest hazards to prevent. Every time you step on a ladder, scaffold, or roof, remember: one small slip can change everything.
1. Plan Ahead
Before starting any job that involves working at heights, make sure there’s a plan in place. Know what type of fall protection is needed — guardrails, scaffolding, or personal fall arrest systems — and check that equipment is ready to use.
2. Use the Right Gear
Always inspect your harness, lanyard, and anchor points before you start work. Look for worn webbing, damaged hooks, or anything that doesn’t look right. If it’s not safe, don’t use it. Your gear is only as strong as its weakest part.
3. Stay Connected
Always stay tied off when working six feet or more above a lower level. Move your anchor point as you move — never unhook to “just grab something.” A few seconds of risk isn’t worth your life.
4. Keep It Clean and Clear
Clutter, tools, and debris can create tripping hazards that lead to falls. Keep walking and working surfaces clean, dry, and free of obstructions.
Remember: Fall protection isn’t just equipment — it’s a mindset. Look out for yourself and your crew. If you see a hazard, speak up. The best fall is the one that never happens.
