Message from the President of the Board

As we close the first quarter of 2022, I am honored to be able to address all of you directly for the first time as BCSP Board President.
I have been a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) since 1993. In that time, I have seen how much the safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) industry, and BCSP, has grown. I have seen advances in just about every aspect of safety, from PPE to ergonomic advancements to Safety Culture development. We are much farther along than when we started. But we are far from finished!
As Board President, I am excited to join you all in continuing to push the industry into new spaces, new research, and new ideas. I also look forward to overseeing BCSP in 2022 as we install new programs, introduce new events, and, as always, strive to improve the lives of workers and those practicing safety.
One way in which we are pushing the boundaries of safety is through the Global Learning Summit (GLS). The GLS is a collaborative effort among BCSP and several industry-leading organizations, that serve as Sponsors, to bring safety education, professional development, and networking access to people across the world. I encourage you to attend the GLS. It’s truly a revolutionary event designed to expand the horizons of SH&E professionals at any stage of their careers at an affordable price.
Safety is best when it’s collaborative. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and BCSP have renewed their partnership to improve occupational safety and health at workplaces throughout the U.S. BCSP and the BCSP Foundation have also joined INSHPO, among others, to invest in a collaborative research investment—accepting requests for proposals on examining the value of using safety professionals. Together, we can use our resources and expertise to improve the lives of safety professionals and workers.
I’m reminded of a quote from Winston Churchill that says, “Danger gathers upon our path. We cannot afford—we have no right—to look back. We must look forward.” As SH&E leaders, we must learn from our past mistakes but continue to look forward as we seek to improve workplace safety and health.
I wish you a safe, happy, and healthy 2022.

Collaborative Research Investment: Examining the Value of Using Safety Professionals
| | |
|
The International Network of Safety and Health Professional Organizations (INSHPO), in collaboration with the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), the BCSP Foundation, the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP), and the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), has announced a collective research investment directed at measuring the impact and value of using safety professionals in the workplace.
“This study represents the culmination of organizations with a common purpose joining to advance safety as a profession and as a necessity in the workplace,” said BCSP CEO Christy Uden, CAE, IOM. “The safety industry is strongest when it’s collaborative, and we will combine the resources of these knowledgeable organizations to improve the impact of safety in the field.”
Requests for proposals for the topic 'Examine the value of using safety professionals, reviewing companies with and without safety professionals,' will open March 14, 2022, and close on April 15, 2022. The study includes an $85,000 investment from the participating organizations and the study will last 12 months.
