Luck is a powerful phenomenon. It can be used to justify a fortuitous outcome that we may not have expected or wanted. But too often we define luck as chance and assign it as the defining force of positive outcomes in our lives. What is missing is the hard work, experience, dedication, and education that results in the positive "luck" we have in our lives.
Luck does not prevent injury and illness in workplaces. Minimizing exposures to injuries and illness is the byproduct of you, the safety professional, and your years of education and training, on-the-job experience, and unrelenting effort to protect your workforce. A near miss of falling debris or a fall prevented by a properly constructed railing may seem lucky, but it is the culmination of the efforts put forth by everyone in the workplace to remain safe. You and other professionals in injury prevention deserve recognition for your efforts.
To recognize you and your colleagues we present a low-cost professional development opportunity readily available to all. The BCSP Global Learning Summit will remove traditional conference barriers associated with cost and geography. It is a virtual professional development event available to everyone, anywhere. The Global Learning Summit is a complement to other professional conferences and seminars held by other organizations. It offers another perspective in safety to align with our mission of advancing the profession.
The BCSP Foundation also has exciting events coming soon. If you were not able to attend the Research & Innovation Summit in person, the Foundation is hosting a virtual experience that will provide a way for everyone to experience the best of the live event from the comfort of home. The Foundation is also unveiling the introductory issue of their academic journal, SHIFT: Global EHS Research to Practice. SHIFT aims to turn research into practice, providing a Best Practices Guide to be used in the field.
We host these events and provide these resources to advance the profession and provide the tools and information safety professionals need to create a safe and healthy workplace. I believe you will find that when equipped with the proper tools, and with a commitment to improvement, you’ll have all the luck in the world.

BCSP Chief Strategy Officer Appointed to NACOSH
|
On July 31, 2021, the U.S. Secretary of Labor, Martin J. Walsh, appointed J.A. Rodriguez Jr., CSP, ASP, BCSP's Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), to the prestigious 12-member National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH) as a management representative for a two-year term.
Rodriguez recently served as VPPPA's Director-at-Large for seven years and as the organization's member-elected Chair of the Board for another two. Rodriguez has held the Certified Safety Professional® (CSP®) for over 13 years and has a strong belief in the connection between the development and improvement of safety professionals' careers and the improvement of safety.
Members of NACOSH provide the Secretary and HHS Secretary substantive input on workplace safety and health issues. They formulate ideas on reducing worker deaths, injuries, and illnesses and provide feedback on OSHA and HHS initiatives to improve worker safety and health.
The Secretary and HHS Secretary may consult with and seek advice and recommendations from NACOSH on Agency priorities, including:
- Leadership in the national dialogue on worker safety and health;
- Strong, fair, and effective enforcement of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards;
- Expanded compliance assistance;
- Guidance and research, including research needs and priorities;
- Expanded partnerships and voluntary programs;
- Regulatory matters;
- and other activities to help reduce work-related deaths, injuries, and illnesses.
- The Secretary and HHS Secretary may also consult with and seek advice and recommendations from NACOSH on new areas and emerging issues involving occupational safety and health. NACOSH's duties are solely advisory and consultative.

BCSP Announces Awards of Excellence and Lifetime Achievement Award Recipients
|
|
|
The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) is honored to recognize the 2021 recipients of the BCSP Awards of Excellence (AoE), the organization's most prestigious awards, and the Lifetime Achievement Award, BCSP's highest honor.
The 2021 recipients are:
- James “Skipper” Kendrick, CSP, CIT, FASSP: Lifetime Achievement Award
- Sanjay Jaiswal, CSP, CIH, CIT, SMS: CSP Award of Excellence
- Rasim Qureshi, P.Eng (Alberta), CSP, ASP, CFPS, CCPSC: ASP Award of Excellence
- David R. Jones, SMS, CHST, STSC: CHST Award of Excellence
- Clint Wolfley, CSP, CHST, STSC: STSC Award of Excellence
When asked what drove his dedication to safety, BCSP Lifetime Achievement Award recipient James Kendrick credited inspiration from his two primary visions: that, in order to achieve excellent safety performance, we must “make it personal” and “It is not about how safe you are, it’s all about how safe you could be.”
The contributions these certificants have made to the safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) profession have been both substantial and consequential, and we are honored to have them as BCSP certificants.

BCSP, BCSP Foundation, and OSHA Renew Alliance
|
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), and the BCSP Foundation have renewed their collaborative relationship to foster stronger safety and health practices and programs, improving American workplaces.
Originally signed February 1, 2018, the renewed OSHA, BCSP, and BCSP Foundation Alliance will continue with an emphasis on developing effective training, educational webinars, professional safety and health certifications, safety and health programs, and fall protection.
BCSP and the Foundation will share information on OSHA's goals and initiatives and invite participation in those. The signatories will collaborate on, share, and disseminate safety and health information such as occupational safety and health laws, standards, and the rights and responsibilities of workers and employers. BCSP credential holders are encouraged to build relationships with OSHA’s Regional and Area Offices to address health and safety issues relevant to their respective industries.
In addition to sharing information, BCSP and the Foundation will provide opportunities to participate in the rulemaking process with OSHA and work with the administration in the creation of guidance documents promoting the advancement of safety and health programs and the role of safety and health practitioners.

BCSP Releases Annual Report
|
The BCSP 2020 Annual Report has been released. In 2020, we were all faced with unprecedented challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those challenges emphasized the importance of what we do as safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) practitioners. It emphasized why recognition of safety practice, and support of safety practitioners’ development and goals, are central to BCSP.
To ensure we continue supporting you in new and exciting ways, we set organizational goals each year focused on uplifting safety practitioners and building the profession. In 2020, despite the extra challenges of quarantine, remote work, and closures of testing centers, we remained steadfast in our mission of supporting you, the safety professional, through accomplishing our goals.
More information about each of these accomplishments is included in the 2020 Annual Report.
