Third Quarter 2024

Message from the President of the Board

Ashok Garlapati, CSP, QEP, CFIOSH, FASSP

As devoted members of the safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) community, we share a common desire to make this world a safer place both now and in the future. Much of what we do every day accomplishes the first part of that goal. We work tirelessly to protect the people around us and make sure they return home safely.

Each of us also has a role to play in the “future” part of that goal. How can we shepherd more young minds along the path of safety? How can we share the knowledge we have accumulated? In short, how can we give back to this noble profession?

As part of our stated mission to “inspire and develop leaders in safety, health, and environmental practice,” BCSP offers a variety of platforms for you to actively influence the future of safety and support the leaders of tomorrow. Your insight and experience are priceless, and there are many ways you can get involved.

On a personal level, consider becoming a mentor. Through our Mentor Connect program you can form mutually beneficial connections and share your insight with up-and-coming safety professionals. Or think about applying the next time we seek nominations for BCSP Ambassadors – you’ll be able to speak directly to audiences in your part of the world about the value of certification.

If you have specific expertise to share, submit your interest in presenting a BCSP Webinar. Those who are selected as presenters have the opportunity to provide critical information to a large audience that sincerely wants it. If you would like to assist with crafting future BCSP exams, apply to join us for one of our many panel activities – you might be chosen to identify content areas or even write new questions.

If you are in a position to give financially, there are active and aspiring professionals who would benefit from your generosity. The BCSP Foundation is always seeking ways to invest in and empower tomorrow's safety community, and your donation would be impactful in the pursuit of those initiatives.

None of us reached this point in our career journey without many people investing in us in one way or another. Whatever avenue you choose, I encourage you to give back in a manner that energizes you. You never know the impact you can make with your support. Let’s join hands to give back to our SH&E profession and budding SH&E professionals.

A Steady Voice and a Listening Ear

Featuring Lindsey Coffield, CSP

Lindsey Coffield was always interested in taking care of people, just not necessarily in the way she does today as a Global Logistics EHS Leader for the newly minted GE Aerospace.

As a biology major at West Virginia University, Coffield instead had an eye toward medical school ... until a serious family injury and an unexpected email changed her course.

Coffield has quickly risen through the safety profession because of her passion, her pursuit of knowledge, and her ability to connect with people. Today she is working in an exciting industry in a momentous period for a company that has made safety a priority.

Like many, her path to the safety profession wasn’t direct but was carved out by unique circumstances. She discovered her career almost by accident but has remained in it because it allows her to do what she has always wanted – to make a difference in people’s lives.

Read Lindsey's Story

“The more time that you can spend interacting with the employees that are actually doing the job, getting their feedback, letting them know that you are hearing their concerns ... even if it’s something that we can’t change, providing that feedback to those employees who are actually hands-on doing the job, I think that goes a long way in building that culture.” -- Lindsey Coffield, CSP

Supporting Safety Students

Hitting the Links for Safety

In continued support of our partners and community, BCSP was represented at this year’s 12th annual Future Safety Leaders Golf Classic, organized by the Central Indiana Chapter of ASSP. The outing raises money each year to support scholarships for ASSP student members attending Indiana State University, Indiana University, and Purdue University.

This year's best-ball scramble was held July 26 at West Chase Golf Club in Brownsburg, Indiana. Over 140 golfers participated. BCSP’s foursome of Tyson Mathews, Nathan Wilson, Jalen Cox, and Dave West finished the day with a score of 68 (3 under par).

A highlight for Dave was “Beating the Pro” on the 142-yard 17th hole and winning that hole’s “Closest to the Pin” challenge with a tee shot that landed 6 feet from the hole. Dave is the first to admit that, while this was an amazing shot for him, the rest of the foursome carried the day on all the other holes!
