Fourth Quarter 2021
Message from the President of the Board
Joaquin M. Diaz, CIH, CSP, OHST, CHST
I always enjoy this time of year. The dichotomy of reflecting on the year while also looking ahead to the future often strikes me. We can review our accomplishments and look ahead to new beginnings where we can achieve new things and resolve our shortcomings. Safety, health, and environmental (SH&E) professionals know our job is never complete, and continuing to learn and advance is how we survive. Your passion is the driving force behind what we do at BCSP. Professional certification is the catalyst for the SH&E practitioner to continue learning and progressing in the advancement of safety.

BCSP and the BCSP Foundation will start the new year with several notable and exciting projects and events. I hope you’re ready for a big year from BCSP! A few things to look forward to in 2022 are the Global Learning Summit, a low-cost, virtual professional development event; SHIFT, a complimentary academic journal and best practices guide; the BCSP Foundation Virtual Career Fair; an updated and more user-friendly version of the BCSP website, and much more! Stay tuned for more exciting announcements throughout the year.

While many of us enjoy the holiday season, this can be a particularly troubling time for those struggling with mental health issues. In a survey conducted by the National Alliance of Mental Illness, 64 percent of people with mental illness surveyed said the holiday season makes their condition worse. It is crucial to reach out to family, friends, coworkers, and those you think may be struggling with their mental health. The pandemic introduced new challenges and opportunities to address mental health in the workplace. Our evolving professional skills need to include mental health awareness and program development to identify stressors impacting employees. Having conversations about mental health doesn’t cost anything. A small gesture could significantly impact someone struggling with mental health issues.

As 2021 comes to an end, so does my tenure as BCSP Board President. I want to thank my fellow Board members, the BCSP staff, and most importantly, you, the SH&E professional. I can speak for the entire organization when I say you inspire us every day to be better and do better. Small steps can create colossal change, and while the year may be ending, we must look ahead to new beginnings.

I wish you all a great end to the year, happy holidays, and a joyous new year.
Message from the BCSP CEO
Christy Uden, CAE, IOM
As 2021 comes to an end, I am tremendously thankful to the BCSP Board Members that volunteer their time, knowledge, and leadership to advance the SH&E profession and future of BCSP. Their dedication to BCSP, and the SH&E industry at large, cannot be understated.

I especially want to thank and recognize Joaquin Diaz, President, and Mario Varela, Past President, for their service and leadership at such a critical time of change and opportunity these past two years. Their genuine caring helped us soar to new heights and lean into one another, creating a connectedness in a time of adversity.

I also want to thank you, the SH&E professional. The work you do continues to expand in importance and global significance. There is a greater understanding of the critical impact you make. While this may be a hectic time of year for many, I hope you find time to reflect and be proud of what you have accomplished. We salute you!

Wishing you a safe and healthy holiday season and a Happy New Year.
