What's New!
COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT!
Sorrento Conference and Retreat Centre has taken the first steps towards organizing a Community Garden Project starting with an exciting FREE Seminar,

Keeping with Sorrento Conference and Retreat Centre’s 2024 theme NOURISH, our free seminar will be hosted at the Centre’s Caritas Conference room on
Friday, February 16; doors open at 6pm, the seminar will begin at 6:30pm and end at 8pm. Refreshments will be offered, and donations happily accepted. There’s plenty of free parking. Everyone is invited to attend. Please pass this information on to anyone you think maybe interested.

Samara Sonmor will be our guest speaker and is the current chair of the newly organized Food Action Society of BC. Samara has overseen community gardens in Vernon, presented tons of workshops to community and school groups, and worked with non-profits, church, indigenous groups, and other organizations wanting to initiate community gardens. Samara will define food security/insecurity and discuss a new way of looking at the problem through Food Resilience. Samara will deliver practical ways people (and communities) can increase their food resilience and how small actions can have big impacts! Community gardens are an important piece of food resilience and Samara will describe their role and different configurations. We are thrilled to partner with Food Action on this project!

The Sorrento Conference and Retreat Centre Farm has the space and the vision to create a Community Garden and hopes to engage community partnerships. We are accepting expressions of interest from local residents who may want to lease a bed ($15 for the season, a limit of two per person/family). Please submit your interest via email to kathie@sorrentocentre.ca

Depending on the success of this first seminar, others will be offered including:
  1. How to build a raised bed
  2. How to fill and plant a raised bed
  3. The benefits of irrigation
  4. The joy of microgreens
Eventually, we hope to offer seminars on food preparation, seed saving, and canning.

Registration will be opening soon. Keep checking the website!
SUBMIT NOW and BE ENTERED TO WIN!
In our last newsletter, we invited you to submit a favourite recipe for our upcoming publication NOURISH: A Guest and Staff Collection of Favourite Recipes.

Staff have responded to the call with some amazing entries.

Unfortunately, we have not received any from guests or associates.
We may have to rename the cookbook!

How about a bit of encouragement? Everyone who submits a recipe on or before the deadline date (Monday, March 11, 2024) will have their name entered in a draw for a FREE cookbook. There will be three draws and they will occur during the Associates May Weekend, May 9 – 12, 2024 when the cookbook will be offered for sale.

Click on the recipe submission button below to help you organize the information we require. We will include a section listing contributors and a bit of information about their affiliation with the Centre.
Please feel free to include a picture of your dish if possible!

Email your submission to tammy@sorrentocentre.ca.
