March 2023

Phyllis L. Rodgers, Founder & CEO

Greetings!

Our clocks have changed to "Spring Forward," and many of us are finally looking forward to post COVID-19 (but still taking some health precautions to ensure safety) and being outdoors amid sunshine, birds chirping, good food and and family gatherings. Our goal in 2023 is to cultivate strong partnerships, and we are on the path to ensuring that those collaborations become a reality. Thank you to Angeli Ledesma (left), from SBB Research Group Foundation for their generous grant and inviting Peer Plus to present our story to staff at their Northbrook office.

Peer Plus volunteers are now referred to as "Ambassadors." Their work has become much more involved, as they advocate on behalf of Peer Plus, as well as extend their time, energy and support to our community events and virtual programs.

Please help us to welcome Dr. Lolita Cleveland as the new President of the Board! Dr. Tonya Roberson is still with us, serving in other professional capacities as well as performing in various academic and community roles at Governors State University.

Peer Plus focuses on bringing more information to you on issues that directly impact community health disparities, especially regarding diabetes, heart disease, stress and dementia, to name a few. Be sure to mark your calendar to participate in our free programs, health fairs and other events for the entire family.

Until next time, please stay healthy, engaged, and Be Well.

Health & Wellness

In honor of Black History Month, Peer Plus partnered with Providence Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago to host a "Jumpstart Your Health and Wellness Day" (Feb. 26).

Speakers (L to R, below) were

Dr. Yvonne Collins (Oncologist) Bruce Taylor (Healthcare Advocate) and Dr. Michael Washington (Pharmacist), all of whom shared powerful insights. A special Thank You to Tasha Berry-Lewis at Providence MBC for her help co-hosting the event.

Colon Cancer Awareness

Peer Plus Founder Phyllis Rodgers was again honored at the COLOGUARD CLASSIC in Tucson, Arizona (Feb. 27-Mar. 5).

In addition to raising monies for youth athletic programs, the Tournament week is used as a national platform to increase colon cancer awareness. In recent years, the Tournament has increasingly focused on charity and community impact on the lives of colon cancer survivors, advocates and caregivers. The event is named after the noninvasive at-home colon cancer screening test created by Exact Sciences.

PGA TOUR Champion Mark O'Meara played in her honor.

The "Hattitude" Spirit

On March 11th, Peer Plus Founder Phyllis Rodgers (far right) was delighted to join community partners 3:16 Magazine, Senior Talk with Clara Hubbard (far left) and attendees to support the 6th Annual Hattitude Brunch at Chicago's historic Mt. Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church. This annual celebration bridges together churches, healthcare providers, community leaders and business owners and provides scholarships to inner-city students going to college.
