The Farmington Road Concept Plan Online Open House wrapped up in early June. The project is developing a plan to improve Farmington Road between 209th Avenue and Kinnaman Road.

About 170 people provided feedback about pedestrian and bicycle facility alternatives on Farmington and improvements to the Farmington and Rosa roads intersection. 

Pedestrian and bicycle facilities alternatives presented:

• Raised bike lane
• Multiuse path
• On-street bike lane with multiuse path

Rosa Road intersection alternatives presented:

• Close Rosa Road at Farmington Road
• Right-in/right-out from Rosa onto Farmington

The open house results will be shared with the Board of County Commissioners. They will consider the benefits, costs and impacts of both the bicycle and pedestrian and Rosa Road intersection options.

Our staff is working on an update to the Washington County Transportation Safety Action Plan through a federal Safe Streets for All grant.

Our TSAP is a strategic plan to help guide our investments to improve safety on roads, streets and trails in unincorporated Washington County.

The TSAP will include:

• A review of transportation safety policies and processes
• Goals and targets for reducing and/or eliminating fatal and severe crashes
• Safety policies, strategies and actions to help make our transportation system safer for all
• Methods for tracking progress

LUT's third-floor lobby in the Public Services Building will be closed for in-person services from July 1-4 while our software and computer systems are updated and tested.

Staff will be in the office and available by phone and for scheduled appointments July 1-3. Most County offices will be closed July 4 for the holiday.

Online services will be available except on July 1 when the ProjectDox and Building and Development Application Services (BDAS) online systems will be down. These systems will be back online July 2. Inspection services will not be impacted.

The software updates are needed for implementation of new FY2025-26 fees and fee increases for permits and applications submitted after July 1 and routine updates to improve services for our customers. 

Microtransit public transportation is coming to the South Cooper Mountain, River Terrace and Progress Ridge areas in early 2026.

Microtransit is a flexible shared-ride shuttle service that will pick up and drop off riders at at preferred locations within the specified service area.

We held an online open house in May, and we are continuing to talk with people at advisory committee and community organization meetings and at public events to learn what prospective users want from this new service.

We learned that most people will use the service for daily errands, shopping or to reach a TriMet connection, based on survey results. Most respondents said they would use the service in the late afternoon and evening hours. 

Transportation News

Springville Road will be closed between Samuel Drive and Joss Avenue from July 7-Sept. 5 for culvert replacement.

Drivers will be detoured to Kaiser and West Union roads and 185th Avenue. Bicyclists and pedestrians will use Joss and 170th avenues. See the vehicle detour map and the bike/pedestrian detour map.

This is the final phase of the Springville Road improvement project. It will widen the road to include a center turn lane, continuous buffered bike lanes, sidewalks and lighting between Joss Avenue and Portland Community College.

Thompson Road/Kenny Terrace Road closure

Thompson Road will be closed between Saltzman Road and 135th Terrace from July 1-Aug. 14.

Drivers will be detoured to Saltzman and Cornell roads and Bethany Boulevard. See the detour map.

We are realigning Thompson Road with Kenny Terrace to improve traffic safety. Construction began in June 2023 and will finish later this summer.

Thompson Road will reopen in the new alignment, replacing Kenny Terrace.

Four pedestrian projects in the Bethany area are expected to begin construction later this summer.

Crossings with button-activated flashing lights at:

• Laidlaw Road and Waterhouse Trail
• Kaiser Road and 147th Avenue
• Bethany Boulevard and Mitchell Avenue 

• Four Waterhouse Trail Crossings with curb ramps, signs and striping

Building these projects together ensures cost-efficient construction. We’ve awarded a construction contract and are now developing schedules. Construction is expected to begin in late July and finish in October. Schedules are subject to change.

Paving work starts in July

Our crews and contractors are gearing up to pave roads in unincorporated Washington County in July. Visit Paved Road Maintenance. 

In the Urban Road Maintenance District (URMD), we will be slurry seal paving over 200 segments of neighborhood streets. We will be overlay paving four miles.

All our paving schedules are subject to change. Schedules already posted online include:

• Slurry seal paving - Funded by the URMD
• Overlay paving - Funded by Road Fund
• Chip seal paving - Funded by Road Fund
• Thin lift overlay paving - Funded by Road Fund

Additional paving schedules are being developed. They will be posted online as they become available.
