Psalms 125 Commentary
(125:1) Trusting in God's truth - Do you know people who are easily drawn to every new trend or idea? Do you find it difficult to rely on them or trust them to carry through with commitments? Do you find it difficult to believe that their latest "new" idea will really make them happy and fulfilled? New trends and ideas, while not necessarily wrong in and of themselves, do point to a general dissatisfaction with how things are now. They expose a need in all of us to find that which is really true, trustworthy, and enduring-a true foundation for life. God is the creator of truth, which is the ultimate example of what is real and lasting and reliable. We can trust God's truth because he never changes. and therefore the principles he has established about how life should work never change. He is not shaken or confused by this world's relentless pursuit of new thoughts and ideas; anyone who is seeking enduring truth will find it through him alone. And those who find God's enduring truth will endure forever.
(125:3) The Rod of the Wicked - Although the psalm writer said, "The rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous," Israel had to put up with many evil rulers. The writer was expressing what will ultimately happen when God executes his final judgment. Human sinfulness often ruins God's ideal on earth, but that doesn't mean God has lost control. Evil prevails only as long as God allows.
