Joy Cometh in the Morning

¹I will extol thee, O LORD; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me.

 ²O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.

 ³O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit.

 ⁴Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

 ⁵For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

 ⁶And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.

 ⁷LORD, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong: thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.

 ⁸I cried to thee, O LORD; and unto the LORD I made supplication.

 ⁹What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? shall it declare thy truth?

 ¹⁰Hear, O LORD, and have mercy upon me: LORD, be thou my helper.

 ¹¹Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness;

 ¹²To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.

Psalms 30 Commentary

(30:1) The Threshing Floor - David may have written this psalm when he dedicated Oran's threshing floor (which became the future site of the temple) and after God had stopped the great plague he had used to discipline David (1 Chronicles 2191-22:6). The serious illness mentioned in Psalm 30:2-3 may refer to an illness David experienced or to the plague itself. 30:2-5 See the benefits of crying to God for help. He restores health, grants eternal life, and gives correction and favor (approval). And he wraps it all up in joy! Maybe it is time to ask for more of his favor when you pray. 

(30:5) God's anger - Like a shot given by a medical professional, the discomfort of God's anger lasts only a moment, but the good effects go on for a long time. Let God's anger be a sharp pain that warns you to turn from sin. 30:6-7. Prosperity and success had made David feel invincible. Although he knew that his riches and power had come from God's favor, they had still gone to his head, making him proud. Wealth, power, and fame can be intoxicating, making us feel self-reliant, self-secure, and independent of God. But this fragile false security can be easily shattered. Don't be trapped by the false sanctuary of prosperity. Depend on God for your security, and you won't be shaken when worldly possessions disappear.

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we continue in the Book of Psalm with Chapter 30. In our text today we see a theme of a celebration of God's deliverance. Earthly security is uncertain, but God is always faithful. I love verse 5 that how Joy cometh in the morning. In making application we see that the Lord is in control when our world is turned upside down. It is the Lord that brings ultimate "joy" in our lives no matter what we may face. How about you? Do you see how the Lord is in control and we simply need to trust Him? Let us learn from our Psalm and text today to remember that the Lord is in control so when we face weeping that endureth for a night, it is joy that cometh in the morning.
