Psalms 70 Commentary
(70:1) A Cry to the Lord - When people we trust disappoint us and turn against us, we feel empty, as though a vital part of ourselves has been stolen. They break our spirit. At those empty, broken moments, we must join the psalm writer in begging God to rush to our aid. He alone can fill our lives with his joy (70:4). With the writer, we should cry out, "O LORD, make no tarrying.
(70:4) David's Plea - This short psalm (similar in content to 40:13-17) was David's plea for God to rush quickly to his aid. Yet even in his moment of panic, David did not forget to praise him. Praise is important because it helps us remember who God is; it reminds us of his greatness, love, mercy, and power. Often our prayers are filled with requests for ourselves and others, and we forget to thank God for what he has done and to worship him for who he is. Don't take God for granted or treat him as a vending machine, dispensing only your favorite choices. Even when David was afraid, he praised God.
