Psalms 101 Commentary
(101:1) A Blameless Life - David may have written this psalm early in his reign as king as he decided the standards by which he wanted to live. David knew that to lead a blameless life he would need God's help (101:2). We can lead blameless lives if we avoid (r) looking at wickedness-anything vile or vulgar (101.3), (2) evil thoughts or associates (lOrd), (3) slander (1015), and (4) pride (LOt.5). While avoiding these wrongs, we must also let God's Word show us the standards by which to live.
(101:2) Integrity - What determines a life of integrity today? Words like sinful and wrong have been replaced by ones like inappropriate and counterproductive. Leaders and celebrities can publicly profess morality but privately live deeply immoral lives. God has a prior claim on us; we belong to him (100:3). Our values, life choices, and rules for engagement begin with him. Has your understanding of right and wrong become blurry? Living by the priorities set forth in this psalm will help you regain your focus.
(101:6) Our Friends - David said that he would keep his eyes on "the faithful of the land." In other words, he would choose as advisers and as friends those who followed God and sought the truth. Our friends and associates profoundly influence us. Make sure to choose as your closest companions those who are faithful to God and his Word. Surround yourself with friends who will be positive influences and lead you closer to God.
