Psalms 111 Commentary
(111:1) Hallelujah Psalms - Psalms 111 through 118 are called hallelujah psalms. Hallelujah means praise the LORD and expresses the uplifting and optimistic tone of these songs.
(111:9) Redemption - The redemption here pictures the rescue by God of the Israelites from Egypt and the future return from their captivity in Babylon (see Deuteronomy 7-8; Jeremiah 31:11). Redemption means "the recovery of something Or someone upon payment of a price." All people ever created were being held in slavery by sin until Jesus paid the price to free us -giving his life as a perfect sacrifice for sin. Before Jesus did this, people were not permitted into God's presence (the most holy place); now, all believers can freely approach God's throne through Jesus, our High Priest (Hebrews 4:14-16), and experience God's presence with us through the Holy Spirit. (See Mark 10:45 and 1 Peter 1:18-20 for more on redemption.)
(111:10) Fearing God - We become truly wise when we fear (revere) God. This same thought is expressed in Psalm 12:a and Proverbs 1:7-9. Many assume they can become wise by gaining life experience or academic knowledge alone. But if we do not acknowledge and respect God as the source of wisdom, then we have no foundation or contest for making wise decisions or understanding perplexing situations that are beyond us. We will then be prone to mistakes and foolish choices because we have removed ourselves from the very source of all wisdom. When we try to figure out life from our limited human perspective, we will always fail.
