Psalms 112 Commentary
(112:1) Faith and Blessings - Many blessings are available to us--joy, honor, prosperity, security, freedom from fear
(112:2-9) Fearing the Lord - When we fear the Lord and delight in obeying his commands. To fear God means to revere, to respect, and to stand in awe of his greatness and goodness. If you desire God's blessings, you must revere him and gladly obey him.
(112:5) Our Money - Generosity can cure two problems that holding on to money creates: (1) Accumulating wealth can cause us to ignore those in need, including those who are dependent on us. In contrast, when our decisions are guided by generosity, we will naturally care for those in need around us and treat others fairly. (2) We may live with great anxiety because we fear losing our money. But if we're generous, we demonstrate that we have placed our trust in God--not our bottom line--for our security, and this frees us from worry.
(112:7-8) Reverencing the Lord - We all want to live without fear; our heroes are fearless people who take on all dangers and overcome them. The psalm writer teaches us that fear of God can lead to a fearless life. To fear God means to respect and revere him as the almighty Lord. When we trust God completely to take care of us, we will find that our other fears- even of death itself--will subside.
