Be In the World, Not Of the World

📺️ 2 Corinthians 6 🔊

1We then, as workers together with him, beseech you also that ye receive not the grace of God in vain.

 2(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

 3Giving no offence in any thing, that the ministry be not blamed:

 4But in all things approving ourselves as the ministers of God, in much patience, in afflictions, in necessities, in distresses,

 5In stripes, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labours, in watchings, in fastings;

 6By pureness, by knowledge, by long suffering, by kindness, by the Holy Ghost, by love unfeigned,

 7By the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armour of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,

 8By honour and dishonour, by evil report and good report: as deceivers, and yet true;

 9As unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and, behold, we live; as chastened, and not killed;

 10As sorrowful, yet alway rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

 11O ye Corinthians, our mouth is open unto you, our heart is enlarged.

 12Ye are not straitened in us, but ye are straitened in your own bowels.

 13Now for a recompence in the same, (I speak as unto my children,) be ye also enlarged.

 14Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

 15And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?

 16And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

 17Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

 18And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

2 Corinthians 6 Commentary

(6:1-13) Paul's Hardships - Paul had demonstrated his willingness to suffer all kinds of hardships—beatings, imprisonments, poverty, and even insults—for Jesus. He had a single-hearted commitment to Christ. This extraordinary commitment, demonstrated by the sufferings he had endured, was proof of his apostolic authority. Instead of submitting a list of successes and accomplishments, Paul submitted a list of difficult situations that he had endured for Christ.

(6:14-18) The Temple of The Living God - The unique Greek writing style of this section indicates that Paul most likely was quoting an early Christian sermon, perhaps even a Jewish sermon. He had already exhorted the Corinthians to be reconciled to God (5:20-21; 6:1-2) and was pleading with them to open their hearts to him as God’s messenger (6:11-12). In this short sermon quote, Paul was reminding the Corinthians what reconciliation to God means. If they were to open their hearts to him as God’s messenger (6:13), they had to separate themselves from the wickedness of unbelievers. Their pagan neighbors would only tempt them to reject God’s word and God’s ways.

Each day we walk through the Bible chapter by chapter making an application of our text to help us grow in the Lord. Many applications can be made from each day's text. Today we continue in the book of 2nd Corinthians with Chapter 6 and in our text we see Paul explains that we are not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers and that the Christian life will not always be a bed of roses but God is faithful and working in our lives. In making application we see that we are to be in the world sharing the love of Christ but not of the world in partaking and yoking with unbelievers. Today, we need to be about the Lords business entering the dark territories of the world with the light of the Gospel. How about you? Are you yoked with unbelievers? Let us learn from our text today and the reminder of Paul that as Christians we are to IN the World but not OF the World, not yoking or partaking of the darkness but sharing the light of the Gospel of Jesus-Christ.

Father in the Name and through the Blood of Jesus we pray that we would Take Today's Reading of Your Word and Give Us Understanding of Its Text, that You Apply this Word to Our Lives, and that you would help us grow in You. Father, Finally we Pray for Your Kingdom to come, that Your Will to be Done here on Earth as it is in Heaven. That You would Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil.
