Chairperson Toolkit - Fundamentals of Chairing Meetings
South East District recently compiled a Chairperson Toolkit to help strengthen local leaders knowledge and skills who are taking on these important positions within boards and committees. "I don't ever want to be a chair - that is too scary!" "I do not want to be the boss?!" "I just don't have the confidence to chair meetings." - these are some of the rumblings we hear, and this toolkit provides tips, tools and best practices that can help you to lead productive and effective meetings for your board or committee! Check it out!

Also, consider hosting our Effective Meetings mini workshop at your next board meeting - we can offer it virtually over our zoom platform! Contact Joni Hagen, ED, at for more information.
Promoting the Value of Sport, Culture and Recreation
All too often, we tend to promote the “what” in our communities – programs, events, facilities – and we sometimes forget to promote the “why” (the benefits that these activities can bring to our community)! Are you promoting your parks, pools, arenas, events or programs? Consider promoting the benefits and outcomes of your activities and facilities by using the! Market the “why” of what you do!

Tips to promoting the benefits of parks, recreation, sport, and arts/culture:

Tip 1: consider creating an infographic to display your recreation and culture opportunities and services in your community. Here is an example from Strathcona!

Tip 2: Consider using video to tell your community story and to market the benefits of sport, culture and recreation. See below!
Everything Gets Better When You Get Active
Check out ParticipACTION's latest campaign and include their messaging on your community website, social media and newsletters!

There are brain benefits, relationship benefits, community benefits and benefits you may have never even expected (like pooping benefits, for instance). The link between physical activity and better physical, mental or emotional health have been proven in study after study. But everyone is different. Understanding what really motivates you (see below), how much and what kind of activity is required to experience positive change (hint – it depends on your age 0-4, 5-17, 18-64 or 65+), and finding an activity you love to do from all the different ways to get physically active is key. Once you get the ball rolling, you won’t believe all the ways activity can benefit you and those around you.

Three (3) WAC members came forward and offered to host these videos, which lightened the load of responsibility. We tried to find crafts that utilized materials that would already be found in most homes. The craft was announced every Monday with a supply list, and on Wednesday there was a video teaching the craft.
