Legislative Solutions

The Illinois teacher shortage remains a problem that touches every district in our state. However, the survey reveals that there is progress being made through the help of legislature changes. Schools in ROE #21 agree there are ways that the shortage can be combatted.

Each year, staff from Project ECHO and STARQuest Academy attend the annual Illinois Coalition for Educating At-Risk Youth (ICEARY) Conference located in Bloomington. One of this year's keynote speakers included Gerry Brooks. The theme of the conference was "I Feel the Need to Succeed." The conference offered professional learning opportunities and breakout sessions focused on self-reflection, inspiration, and practical strategies.

CAREER & TECHNICAL EDUCATION: PLUMBERS AND PIPEFITTERS

OPEN HOUSE

On Thursday, March 2, 2023, the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program of Franklin County held an Open House event in conjunction with the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union 551. The CTE program works with the six high schools in Franklin County to support and promote all areas of vocational education that align with the local labor needs. CTE programs in Illinois provide instruction for careers in high-wage, high-skill, and in-demand occupations. The purpose of the Open House was to give students and parents an opportunity to see the training facility and to gather information about the possibility of beginning a class for high school junior and senior students who are interested in the trades that the Plumbers and Pipefitters support. Students who take the class would gain two credit hours toward their high school graduation and would also earn safety certifications such as OSHA. The guidance counselors from the six high schools in Franklin County will also have information about the course, for those who could not attend the Open House. We encourage students who are interested in enrolling in the class, to speak with their school guidance counselor to get their name on the class list as soon as possible.

Jim Boles, the training coordinator and CTE Director Jan Farkas talking with students about the new program for local high schools.
