Exploring the World of Neuroscience: Healthcare Academy at UCLA Brain Awareness Week

Our Health Academy students at Valley High School recently had the exciting opportunity to participate in UCLA’s Brain Awareness Week, where they explored the fascinating field of neuroscience.

During the event, students engaged in hands-on lab activities and interactive stations, deepening their understanding of brain disorders and the impact of neurological and mental health conditions on individuals and communities.

They were also introduced to cutting-edge brain research equipment and had the rare chance to interact directly with scientists and researchers. These professionals shared insights on current studies, emerging career paths, and the expanding role of neuroscience in healthcare.

This immersive experience connected classroom learning to real-world applications, sparked curiosity about the brain, and inspired our students to consider future careers in medical, scientific, and healthcare fields.

STUDENT COMPETITIONS

Culinary Academy students participated in the ProStart Cup on March 2–3, 2026, where they applied their skills in a high-level, real-world competition setting. Beyond the competition, students connected with industry professionals at the career fair, gaining exposure to career pathways and building valuable connections for their future.

The experience strengthened their communication, teamwork, and technical skills while increasing their confidence in the culinary field.

"The more you compete, the more you build connections and your network.”

 - Culinary student

Healthcare Academy students competed in the HOSA – Future Health Professionals Competition, with 35 students participating in the State Qualifier rounds (January 12–16, 2026) and 11 advancing to the State Competition (March 26–28, 2026).

Students competed in events including Medical Terminology, Dental Terminology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Medical Assisting, applying their knowledge in a competitive setting.

A major highlight was a Top 10 state finish (8th place) in Medical Terminology, marking the first time a Valley High School student has achieved this recognition.

The experience strengthened students’ confidence, technical knowledge, and interest in pursuing healthcare careers.

Automotive Academy students competed in the Cypress College Automotive Skills Challenge on March 18, 2026, demonstrating their technical skills across six timed stations, including tire rotations, brakes, and electrical circuits.

Competing against 11 teams, Valley students earned both 2nd and 3rd place, along with additional recognition in the Pit Challenge for the fastest tire change.

Beyond the awards, students applied their classroom learning in a real-world setting, building confidence, teamwork, and problem-solving skills that strengthen their readiness for careers in the automotive industry.

Academy Collaboration Fun

On March 18, the New Media, Culinary, and Global Business Academies held a fun and collaborative Pie Eating Contest. Culinary students showcased their baking skills by preparing a variety of pies, including homemade blueberry pies for the main event. New Media students led production; a full film crew captured the segment, including hosts providing live commentary and a production team ensuring everything ran smoothly. Global Business teachers stepped in as contestants, with Mr. Scanlon and Ms. Santiago taking on the challenge. In the end, Mr. Scanlon claimed the win, cheered on by his students. The event was a great example of cross-academy collaboration, bringing together energy, creativity, and school spirit.

GBA attends the Women in Power: Breaking Barriers, Building Futures Luncheon

Global Business Academy students had an incredible opportunity to attend the Women in Power: Breaking Barriers, Building Futures luncheon on March 20 at Chapman University, hosted by the Orange County Hispanic Youth Chamber of Commerce.

Students began the day with a tour of the university, followed by a powerful luncheon experience where they heard from inspiring women leaders who are breaking barriers and leading with purpose. Each speaker shared personal stories of perseverance, growth, and success that truly resonated with students and left a lasting impact.

This experience provided students with meaningful exposure to higher education and real-world leadership, inspiring them to envision their own paths and future possibilities

BTE Seniors Gain Real-World Interview Experience at Johnson & Johnson

On March 9, Bridge to Employment Senior Cohort students participated in a Mock Interview Day at Johnson & Johnson (Irvine), beginning with a panel of professionals who shared their career journeys and insights. Students then engaged in small-group discussions and mock interviews, where they practiced their skills and received direct feedback from the J&J team. By the end of the experience, students left feeling more confident and better prepared. One student shared that the experience helped them better understand the interview process and how to prepare for it.

Valley High School Ambassadors came together this month to focus on how they can give back to their school community. Through thoughtful discussion and collaboration, students identified meaningful ways to make an impact.

They are currently planning a Teacher Appreciation initiative to recognize and celebrate their teachers, ensuring they feel valued for the work they do each day. In addition, Ambassadors are launching a Senior Encouragement Project, where students across grade levels can share messages of support and positivity with graduating seniors as they approach the end of their high school journey. Both initiatives will roll out in May, reflecting the Ambassadors’ commitment to strengthening school culture and uplifting their peers and staff.

Last month, our 10th-grade Ambassadors at Century High School successfully led a Beautify Century campus project. This student-led initiative focused on improving and maintaining our school environment and was a great success.

Looking ahead, our program has several upcoming activities, including one additional community service project and a campus tour for our CTE elementary school partners, giving younger students the opportunity to learn more about our programs and pathways.

We recently wrapped up an exciting round of interviews for our MACC Summer Internship, meeting with approximately 130 students from across the AUHSD. This program offers participants the opportunity to choose a cohort that aligns with their interests Culinary, Entrepreneurship, or Public Health giving them a sense of ownership in shaping their summer experience.

For many of these students, this marks their very first job, making the process especially meaningful as they take an important step toward their future goals. In partnership with Fullerton College, we will also be offering a dual enrollment class Horticulture 001.

In this course students will learn the identification and use of ornamental plants, culture of landscape plants, morphology of leaves, flowers, and fruits, soil property surveys and fertilizers, safe and responsible use of pesticides and their alternatives, and landscape design principles for basic horticulture skills.

With 80 positions available, the selection process has been both inspiring and challenging; we were truly impressed by the enthusiasm, curiosity, and potential each student brought to their interview. Beyond job placement, our team is committed to ensuring that all selected interns are set up for success.

We are thrilled to offer resume-building workshops and financial literacy courses, equipping students with essential skills that extend far beyond the summer months. All applicants will be notified of their selection status by April 13th.

We are grateful to every student who applied and shared their aspirations with us, and we look forward to welcoming a new cohort of interns who are ready to learn, grow, and make a meaningful impact through this program.

Our UCI Science Project interns are gearing up to bring hands on environmental learning to the MACC across the Anaheim Union High School District. Representing a diverse range of majors including Earth System Science, Psychological Science, Education Sciences, and Biological Sciences these UCI students are preparing themselves to teach engaging lessons on pollination, composting, regenerative farming, and heat mapping. As they collaborate, plan, and practice, they are not only building meaningful connections, but also beginning to see themselves as future educators. This experience offers them a valuable opportunity to connect their academic knowledge with real world impact, as they inspire younger students to think critically about sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Beyond lesson planning, this program continues to strengthen the bridge between university learning and community engagement. By stepping into classroom environments, interns gain firsthand experience working with students of different ages and learning styles. They are developing skills in communication, adaptability, and leadership tools that will serve them well in any future career path. At the same time, 7th–12th students benefit from fresh perspectives and interactive activities that make complex environmental topics accessible and exciting.

As we look ahead, we are excited to see the lasting impact these interns will have, both on the students they teach and on their own professional journeys. Programs like this cultivate not only knowledge, but confidence and purpose.

We are proud to support these emerging educators as they “dip their toes” into teaching, and we look forward to watching many of them grow into passionate leaders in education, science, and community advocacy.

As we continue to expand our impact, we invite you to be part of this movement. The MACC is always seeking volunteers to help us grow fresh food for our community.

Join us on Fridays for volunteer days and experience firsthand the incredible work happening on our farm.

We hope to see you at our next farm-to-table dinner and in the fields alongside us soon.

Mentorship at Valley High School

Our Mentorship Program at Valley High School held its second session, and it was quite an event. Mentors returned ready to continue building connections, focusing on communication. Through a guided activity, mentors and students created their own questions to get to know each other on a deeper level, strengthening relationships while practicing speaking, active listening, and showing up authentically.

The session ended with a paper tower challenge, where groups worked together by listening, sharing ideas, assigning responsibilities, and trusting one another.

Mentors and students walked away with stronger connections, more trust in their groups, and greater confidence in being themselves.
