Weigh In On The APS 2024-30 Strategic Plan by October 6

Integrating climate solutions into Arlington Public Schools’ upcoming 2024-2030 Strategic Plan would be an investment in its students’ future, provide healthier and more conducive learning environments,

and reduce energy costs. APS is seeking input through October 6. Ask APS to make sustainability one of its priorities by:

  • Committing to be carbon neutral by 2040 (as Fairfax County Public Schools have done) and moving to eliminate fossil fuels in its operations by enhancing energy efficiency, shifting to electric systems for heating, hot water, and cooking, and moving to electric school buses.
  • Expanding tree canopy coverage, native plantings, and vegetable gardens at schools to ensure all students have easy access to nature.
  • Reducing waste and enhancing recycling and composting in the classrooms and cafeterias.
Complete the APS Questionnaire by Oct 6

Volunteer Spotlight

Carolyn Ryffel

When Carolyn Ryffel moved back to the area nine years ago she looked for volunteer activities in the local community. Energy Masters’ mission was a perfect fit for her. As a bonus, she learned new skills, became a part of a diverse multigenerational group, and put her Spanish language skills to good use. Carolyn loves the hands-on team work in affordable housing units mixed with the educational presentations for community groups and schools. She finds it very rewarding to be able to reach so many people while having fun and learning.

Carolyn shared this special moment with us -

"During Covid when Energy Masters went virtual and needed hour-long educational programs in Spanish, I hired a tutor in Guatemala and worked through the presentation. The document was improved, I could better speak to the bullet points and the instructor in Guatemala learned things that she can do to conserve energy."

Carolyn is an invaluable volunteer always willing to go that extra step. Carolyn has often stepped in and helped out at tabling events for EcoAction Arlington when needed. She's an all around All-Star!

The Fall Planting Season will run from October through December. We will be actively engaged in planting trees to enhance our community's green spaces. Between the Spring and Fall planting season we have been busy! In May, EcoAction Arlington received a $60,000 donation from the NAACP Arlington Branch supporting environmental justice and tree equity in historically underserved neighborhoods.

The general boundaries are 16th Street/17th Road/17th Street to the south, George Mason Drive to the west, Langston Blvd to the north, and Buchanan Street/Culpeper Street to the East. High View Park, formerly Hall’s Hill, began as a post-Civil War community for freed slaves. It was separated from the white neighborhoods by an 8-foot high segregation fence, some of which still stands, up until the 1950s. Its tree canopy is 20%* with a Tree Equity Score of 82. It is very walkable with a Walk Score of 87/100. You can learn more about the neighborhood on October 14 at its Community Outreach Day which includes a walking tour.
