The Word This Sunday
October 21, 2018
22nd Sunday after Pentecost
Today’s gospel starts with disciples obsessing over who’s number one, which leads Jesus to say something about God's take on importance and power. Here Jesus makes it explicit that the reversal of values in God’s community is a direct challenge to the values of the dominant culture, where wielding power over others is what makes you great. When we pray “your kingdom come” we are praying for an end to tyranny and oppression. We pray this gathered around the cross, a sign of great shame transformed to be the sign of great honor and service.

The suffering servant

You have made the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your habitation.  (Ps. 91:9)

Through suffering Christ becomes the source of salvation

Warnings to ambitious disciples
Pastor Monica's
60-Second Sermon
"It’s good to be trusted by people in power; it makes us feel capable, confident and important. Recognition by our boss feels great because it proves to our colleagues, to the world, and perhaps most keenly to ourselves that we are worthy. When we spend our short time on earth fixated on recognition and power, we miss so many opportunities for genuine friendship, authentic kindness and shared imagination. Many CEOs confess that it’s lonely at the top, not at all what they envisioned during that ladder-climb, and not worth the personal sacrifices they made to get there. Jesus reminds James and John that it’s not about who sits at his right hand in glory, but who kneels at the feet of the poorest of the poor to give of himself and share God’s love. The only corporate ladder Jesus ever climbs is the rocky hill to Calvary’s cross, so he may give himself to be crucified for our sins. Jesus came to serve all people; let’s serve others in his example. That’s where we’ll find true power, in unconditional love for neighbor and for God.

Mark 10:35-45

Peace to all,   Pastor Monica
On All Saints Sunday, November 4, 2018, we will be reading aloud the names of all our loved ones who have died in the last twelve months. Please e-mail Carol Webster the names of those individuals you want to remember by no later than October 26, 2018.
Hurricane Michael has left its mark on the Gulf Coast of Florida as well as areas of Alabama, Georgia, Virginia and the Carolinas. At this time monetary gifts are most helpful. They can be given to  Lutheran Disaster Response , the  ELCA Southeastern Synod (give to Disaster Ministry) , or  Lutheran Services of Georgia (give to Disaster Response fund) .
Pastor Monica's Schedule

St. Louis Catholic Church, in coordination with the DEA and the Memphis Police Department, will host a drop-off from 10 am - 2 pm on Saturday, October 27 in the St. Louis parking lot on White Station for all those expired, unused or unnecessary prescription and non-prescription pills that are cluttering up your medicine cabinets.    NO QUESTIONS ARE ASKED!!!
On Sunday, November 4, immediately following the worship service, we will hold a "Celebration of God's Abundance" potluck in the Kingsway Fellowship Hall.
