The Word This Sunday
January 27, 2019
Third Sunday After Epiphany
The glory of the Lord is revealed in the reading of scripture. People stand at attention. People weep. People prostrate themselves in prayer. The unity of the church is another reflection of the glory of God. Most gloriously, the promises of God are fulfilled in the person of Jesus Christ. Gather round. Listen up. Glimpse the glory of God.

Ezra reads the law of Moses before the people

The teaching of the LORD revives the soul. (Ps. 19:7)

You are the body of Christ

Jesus reads from the scroll of the prophet Isaiah

Please plan on attending our Congregational Meeting on January 27th immediately following the worship service. We will vote to accept the 2018 Epiphany annual report, install new council members, and approve the nominating committee chairperson.
Pastor Monica's
60-Second Sermon
" Jesus is infamous for transforming familiar tasks into bold proclamations that up-end the status quo. Like anyone who serves as a Lector in worship, Jesus reads from a sacred scroll of Isaiah in the Temple; but unlike us, Jesus transforms this simple reading into a stunning declaration of his identity as the Messiah, the one about whom Isaiah prophesies. By admitting that he is God’s anointed servant who will bring good news to the poor, proclaim release to the captives, restore sight to the blind and free the oppressed, Jesus of Nazareth announces his obedience to fulfill God’s holy mission. Jesus’ declaration shocks his audience and invites questions; he wants to provoke people, to shake them out of their complacency so they'll see how God is at work all around them. How can you proclaim boldly for Jesus in your sphere of influence? How can you invite questions about your faith, or enter into quiet and confidential conversations that draw seekers to pay attention to the Spirit’s nudge? Jesus is with you; be bold!"

Luke 4:14-21
