The Word This Sunday
July 21, 2019
Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

Perhaps the church, at its best, is “all ears.” Almighty God urges the faithful, again and again, to “listen up!”—to heed the word from above. So it was with Abraham and Sarah, with Mary and Martha, and the early church at Colossae. So it is today as we join the assembly to hear the word of God, the words of life.
The hospitality of Abraham and Sarah to three visitors of the Lord
Lord, who may abide upon your holy hill?
(Ps. 15:1)
Hymn to Christ, the firstborn of all creation
Jesus says: Martha, your sister Mary has chosen the better part

Pastor Monica's
60-Second Sermon
|
"
When women are named in the Gospels, it’s evidence that their lives and interaction with Jesus are significant within the first-century patriarchal system that often silenced women’s voices. Sisters Mary and Martha both welcome Jesus into their brother’s house, each in different ways: Martha demonstrates hospitality to Jesus by cooking him a delicious meal, where Mary ignores traditional ‘woman’s work’ to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to his teachings. Both women are being faithful to God and showing love and respect for Jesus, but Mary seizes this rare opportunity to learn from a respected teacher without rejection. Martha honors Jesus with her gift of hospitality, while Mary honors Jesus as a teacher of God’s wisdom and ways. Yet Mary understands that time spent with God is a priceless gift that transcends duty and responsibility."

On Sunday, July 28, 2019 we will be collecting a special offering for the benefit of the
ELCA Disaster Relief Fund
for flood victims (50%) and the
Germantown GIVES Flood Relief Fund
(50%). On June 7, 2019, over 140 Germantown residents (uninsured against flood damage as they reside outside flood zones) incurred damage to their homes as a result of more than 10 inches of rain in just 3 hours; over $7 million of uninsured damage was estimated once the water receded. This special collection will be in addition to the weekly offering and is tax - deductible. Checks should be made to Epiphany with a note on the memo line noting “Disaster Relief Fund.” If one check is issued for both the weekly offering and special offering, please note on the check the amount for each. The deadline for donations is Wednesday, July 31; if you will be out of town during the next two weeks, you may mail your donation to: Epiphany Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 1805, Collierville, TN 38027 before the deadline or request that a fellow church member turn in your donation for you. Thank you!
