The Word This Sunday
December 2, 2018
First Sunday of Advent
|
Advent is about the “coming days.” God’s people have always lived in great expectation, but that expectation finds specific, repeated enunciation in the texts appointed for these four weeks. The ancients anticipated a “righteous Branch to spring up for David.” The Thessalonians awaited “the coming of our Lord Jesus with all the saints.” Our Lord’s contemporaries hoped for the time “to stand before the Son of Man.” With them we eagerly await the coming days: another Christmas celebration, a second coming, and the advent of our Lord in word and supper.
A righteous branch springing up from David
To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
(Ps. 25:1)
Strengthen hearts of holiness for the coming of the Lord
Be alert for the coming of the Son of Man

Pastor Monica's
60-Second Sermon

"
Have you ever wondered how you might react when Jesus returns to rule Creation? Jesus offers us some wisdom to ponder: yes, when Christ returns, there will be frightening signs in the earth and the heavens, and we may be tempted to run and hide. But Jesus reminds us that above all, we are his, claimed in holy baptism. He calls us to put off all fear and hold our heads high on that day, in the joy that trusts in God’s merciful covenant of love and grace. We must keep watch and be ready for Christ’s reign of glory, because we will participate in it, sharing in Jesus’ Resurrection and eternal life through the Holy Spirit’s bond with us in baptism. We must be ready to answer when Jesus calls our name, to say, “Yes, Lord, I am here” and stand before Jesus as beloved, forgiven children of a merciful God. In this First week of Advent, consider how ready you are to meet Christ, and prepare your hearts to boldly respond to Jesus’ call, when he comes."
Luke 21:25-36

Chrismon Ornaments
Place Your Order by Dec 9!
Expert seamstress and craftswoman Lois Ketcham is taking orders for the family Chrismon ornaments to hang on Epiphany’s Chrismon Tree, which will be decorated on Sunday, Dec. 16th during worship. Traditionally, every Epiphany family hangs a white/gold Chrismon ornament bearing their family name on the tree. Special Chrismons may also be made to honor departed loved ones, a new family addition, or to the glory of God. Lois charges $7 per Chrismon to cover the cost of the materials and she offers several designs: an angel, a baptism shell, a dove, etc. Please
contact Lois to place your order.
