For the current quadrennium, the Virginia Conference has contracted with Rev. Lindsay Geist, an ordained deacon in the North Georgia Annual Conference and a licensed clinical social worker and therapist. The training will include an online module AND an in-person training. The training will be offered seven times throughout the quadrennium. The dates and locations are below.

Before each in-person training, there will be a two-week window to complete the online module. Instructions will be provided upon completion of the registration process.

The cost will be $100, which supports the price of the online module, materials for the in-person training, and lunches.Find the dates and locations, and the registration here https://vaumc.org/ethicsvideos/

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

The First 90 Days Coaching Group

Moving to a new ministry setting this year? Be a part of “The First 90 Days” clergy coaching group where you will gain the support of clergy colleagues and a trained clergy coach, share ideas, celebrate successes, and find balance in life and ministry in this new season. You will also earn 1 CEU for completion. Find more details here.

The Mission Rivers District has a new role this year: Director of Clergy Support. The new position incorporates the vision of our previous district superintendent, conversations and dreaming with both the outgoing and incoming district superintendents, along with the support of district leadership. The position is focused on support, resources, and encouragement for clergy; helping clergy connect with one another and tend to the whole self; facilitating connection and collaboration between clergy and congregations; and pastoral care for clergy.

I am Deborah Lewis, your new Director of Clergy Support. I am an ordained elder, and previously served on the Board of Ordained Ministry, where I have witnessed the range of clergy tending (or not) to the whole self.  I have witnessed clergy with strong support systems, professional boundaries, and personal habits who were able to thrive in extremely challenging times—and I have seen others who struggled without these and other resources in place. And the difference is not simply a matter of individual clergy talents and persistence. The “clergy ecosystem”—local church, denomination, supervisors, colleagues, seminaries, grantors—all have parts to play in nurturing and supporting healthy clergy. I am thrilled that Mission Rivers is taking this step to be a proactive part of the ecosystem.

I have a long interest in how clergy take good care of ourselves, while taking care of so many others. I hope for us to lean into and trust God’s abundant love and grace for us, even when there is still more on the “to do” list. I hope for us to learn together, as we get to know one another better across the district. To that end, there will be invitations to gather informally, and many one-on-one calls and conversations. As I get to know you and the district, I want to hear what you have found helpful and supportive—and what has been lacking.  I will be listening a lot and creating space to gather and be together.

I am delighted to be serving in this new role, which brings together so many threads from my life, ministry, and recent study and training. After serving in campus ministry for over 20 years, my family moved to Williamsburg in 2022, where I completed a master’s degree in counseling, including an independent study  on “Clergy Healing, Self-care, and Resilience.” Since graduating from William & Mary last May, I have been appointed as a pastoral counselor (resident) at Peninsula Pastoral Counseling Center, where I have facilitated support groups for clergy. As I move into the Director of Clergy Support role, I will balance my roles with the district and PPCC, serving in each setting half time. At home, my husband Woody and I offer support to my mother and to my adult stepson who has non-verbal autism. I understand what it’s like to have a lot going on, to sometimes feel torn between work and home, and to need extra support.  I look forward to hearing how it’s been for you, and to supporting clergy together.

Clergy: You will be hearing from me as I make my way around the district, reaching out to everyone individually. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me:

Usual days: Mondays, Thursdays, & Friday mornings

On a recent evening, youth from around the district gathered for a time of faith,

fellowship, and fun hosted at Susanna Wesley in Gloucester, VA. While the group was

small, the impact was powerful, proof that even a few hearts set on Christ can make for

a meaningful night.

We began the evening around a crackling campfire, roasting hot dogs and

enjoying classic snacks like s’mores and popcorn. Laughter and conversation filled the

air as the youth connected with each other in a relaxed and welcoming environment.

A highlight of the evening was the chance to share uplifting biblical messages

written not on paper, but on the sides of our coordinator’s truck! Armed with paint

markers, each youth added words of encouragement, Scripture, and truth for all to see.

It was a joyful and creative reminder that faith can be expressed in bold and unexpected

ways.

Later, the rain pushed us indoors for a game of “Elevator Sermons.” In this fast-

paced challenge, participants picked random objects and had just 30 seconds to 1

minute to craft a mini-sermon on the spot. The creativity and depth of insight were

impressive—and often hilarious—as youth took ordinary objects and turned them into

tools to share spiritual truth.

We are excited about future gatherings and hopeful to see continued growth.

Keep an eye on the district newsletter and email announcements for the next youth

event—we’d love to see more faces, more messages, and more moments of God at

work among us.

Local Churches

Fredericksburg UMC is planning on doing the Disciple One Course (Long version) this fall. We are looking for the current version of CD’s and Study Guide for this course. If a church has the material and are willing to loan/give it to FUMC please email Bob Pickett at bob.pickett1@verizon.net or call him at 540-834-3068. Thanks for your consideration.

Hey! Looking to see if any church would be done with their VBS by August 1, and would like to donate their decorations. Urbanna UMC is doing True North. We are looking for a moose and a polar bear in particular.

Thanks so much,
