IAR NEWS
“It is impossible to predict how housing markets will perform in the next several months given the Coronavirus’ arrival in the United States and its far-reaching impact. We likely won’t see it reflected in our monthly report for a while given the delay in reporting closed sales,” said Terre Haute’s Bernice Helman, 2020 President of the Indiana Association of REALTORS®.
“What Indiana Realtors do know for sure is that real estate has always happened at the corner of life and change. This guarantees there will continue to be a need for housing. And now more than ever, Hoosiers are relying on the comfort of home. Realtors will keep using tools such as virtual tours and digital signatures to make transactions happen, and we’ll keep innovating for our clients.”
Since the strengthened stay-at-home order for Hoosiers via Executive Order 20-18 , many of you have asked...
“What about showings and open houses?”
Good question!

IAR believes the order is left open to interpretation for a couple reasons:
  1. It would be impossible to list each scenario in the professional services category (legal, accounting, insurance, and real estate).
  2. Most importantly, IAR believes Governor Holcomb is doing his best to keep businesses open and people working. That’s why he’s issuing orders two weeks at a time while his team monitors the virus’ impact, trusting Hoosiers to do the right thing to help stop the spread.

IAR knows clients are looking to you for help. They know your livelihood is at stake. They know you’re wanting direction.

Based on the language of Executive Order 20-18 , IAR's recommendations are as follows:
  • Check each business activity by the standard set forth above.
  • In-person showings and other face-to-face meetings should be very rare and only if not doing so will have a “significant adverse impact on the client’s financial or legal position.”
  • If an in-person showing is necessary, make sure the seller consents and the broker is willing.
  • Do not hold in-person open houses. Replace them with virtual tours.

Please remember, not every state’s governor saw to include real estate as an essential business or service. It’s a privilege to conduct real estate transactions in Indiana right now. Maintaining that privilege depends in part on the responsibility we show in exercising it. We trust the Holcomb administration to continue to strike the right balance between housing needs and public health.

LICENSE RENEWAL PROCESS IS OPEN!
The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency/Indiana Real Estate Commission has opened the license renewal process.
Here are some tips:
  • Do not click yes if you have not completed ALL your required CE. The license renewal process will ask if you completed the required continuing education (CE). It’s tempting to click yes and plan to complete CE later, especially since you do not submit certificates of completion during the renewal process (schools do this for you). However, if you click yes and it’s discovered through an audit that you completed CE afterward, you will receive a fine.
  • Give the license renewal process your full attention. Last time, we know of some members who erroneously clicked no to the U.S. citizenship question. They spent a lot of time and trouble proving their citizenship and getting it corrected in IPLA/IREC records. In fact, since the renewal process opened this morning, 100+ have selected yes to both the U.S. citizen and qualified alien question (not possible). If you’ve already renewed, please check that you did it correctly. If you made a mistake, get to work fixing it immediately. Otherwise, your ability to do business may be put on hold.

The deadline is June 30, 2020.
Don’t risk your license and livelihood by waiting!
