Outstanding Class
The Accident Scene Management class conducted on October 23rd provided the attendees with valuable information and hands on training that could potentially save the lives of fellow bikers.

While the class was a full day, the time passed quickly. The instructor, Penni Fuller ("Gypsy"), was very engaging and used a very "hands on" approach to teaching how to effectively respond to an accident scene. The class was very enlightening and enjoyable.

The overall objective for the class is to teach "PACT." PACT stands for:

Prevent Further Injury
Assess the Situation
Contact EMS
Treat for Injuries

The class goes into more detail than I expected and Gypsy has the students apply the procedures themselves. Getting hands on training (versus via video conference) helps the students fully understand how to apply what is taught in class.
Three of my fellow students in the class I took are riders on the tour and two of the students are in a motorcycle group that I ride with (Comal River Riders).

One of the students, Bruce Wayne "Batman" Lovely has decades of experience riding in the U.S. and overseas on different types of bikes. He is also retired from the military. I asked Batman to give me his unbiased impression of the class we took. He provided the following statement:

"I believe every motorcycle rider should take this course, especially for those who were previously in the military or first responders. Procedures change over time through research and study and some of the former trauma procedures are obsolete and should not be done. I learned from the course that treating combat related trauma and civilian highway trauma are much different and require different techniques. For example, the course taught me how to remove a full face helmet; I learned that stop the bleeding techniques are different in a combat situation versus a civilian accident; I learned that some of the previous tourniquet techniques are no longer acceptable; I learned what I need to carry in my motorcycle trauma kit based on the limited space; I learned that I need to keep my first aid kit and trauma kit in separate pouches; I learned the proper way to do rescue breathing versus CPR."

As bikers, we know that there is inherit risk to riding a motorcycle. The more bikers who receive the training the better for all of us. If you have an accident, you will want to someone on scene that knows how to properly respond to increase your changes of survival. You will also want to know how to respond yourself if a fellow biker goes down.

Gypsy is willing to travel to different parts of Texas to provide the class. Of course, she needs a minimum number of students for each class to make it feasible for her travel. So, I have created a survey to see how much interest there is in riders in different parts of Texas.

Please take a moment to take the survey so we can determine if there is enough interest for her to provide a class in your area. Just click the survey button below.
