Volunteers Provide Help and Hope!

On August 27, HomeAid hosted volunteers from Roswell’s Northview Church at a Care Day at Forsyth County Family Haven. Work included painting tasks, floor repairs, and more. Forsyth County Family Haven provides safe temporary shelter, individual crisis support, and referral services for victims of violence in Forsyth and North Fulton Counties. The work of volunteers plus Sherwin-Williams’ generous donation of paint provided a savings of nearly $6,000 for Family Haven.

HomeAid held a Care Day on September 9 at The Salvation Army Metro Atlanta Red Shield Services. Volunteers from the Young Professionals Group of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association and Professional Women in Building Atlanta Chapter completed several landscaping tasks. Their work provided a savings of over $4,600 for The Salvation Army Red Shield Services, which provides refuge and safe lodging for homeless men, women and families with children in crisis.

On September 13, Taylor Morrison Atlanta employees packed 500 HomeAid CareKits for Project U First, an organization with a mission of supporting the most vulnerable members of our community by providing basic hygiene products. This fun group of volunteers had a great time packing CareKits, which include basic hygiene items, snacks, water, and socks generously provided by Bombas.

HomeAid Impact: The September 9 Care Day was HomeAid’s 12th of the year. So far in 2022, HomeAid Care Days have provided a savings of well over $60,000 in maintenance costs for organizations serving people experiencing homelessness. HomeAid has four remaining Care Days planned for this year.

HomeAid volunteers have packed and distributed 2,000 CareKits this year, with another 500 scheduled for this fall.
Who HomeAid Helps: Project U First
HomeAid Atlanta is proud to support the work of Project U First through our CareKits initiative. On September 16, HomeAid delivered 500 CareKits packed by Taylor Morrison employees to Project U First Founder Erica Wright (left).

Since its inception in 2014, Project U First has distributed more than 1 million hygiene kits, 300,000 blankets, and 225,000 pairs of socks to homeless shelters, foster homes, and schools in low-income areas. These items are inexpensive, but to a homeless person, or a child living in poverty, they’re an important step on the path toward dignity.

After witnessing a woman washing her hair under a bridge, Project U First Founder Erica Wright understood – perhaps for the first time – how the homeless lack even the simplest products to stay clean and healthy, products most of us take for granted. Not long afterward, Erica became more than a witness. She became homeless herself. This started Erica's amazing journey. She lacked money, credit, and a plan, but with God’s help, and her own passion, she went from darkness into light: Learn more about Erica and Project U First here.
Construction Update: Gigi's House
We're making good progress on our new ten-bedroom home at Gigi's House! Gigi's House cares for girls ages 13-19 who are victims of sex trafficking, providing a safe home in a faith-based, loving environment, trauma-informed therapy, home school, mentoring, life skills, and more. Road paving is done, and exterior painting is set to start this week.

Construction will start soon on a second project at Gigi's House to create an administrative and education building. Led by Meritage Homes, this building will provide space for therapy sessions, home school, life skills classes, and much more.

Builders and Architects: We Need You!
HomeAid has some great opportunities for you to give back doing what you do best!
We're in need of a volunteer Builder Captain to lead an upcoming project at Breakthru House in the Decatur area. Breakthru House transforms the lives of women struggling with addiction. Work includes tearing down a home to build two homes on the same property. The project will add 20 beds.

We're also looking for a Builder Captain for an upcoming project at House of Dawn in Jonesboro. The project would establish affordable housing - two buildings at one location - for mothers with children as they transition from homelessness to independence. This project will add 24 beds.

We're looking for an architect to complete a conceptual drawing for the House of Dawn project ASAP.

Leadership Atlanta Selects HomeAid Project
Members of the Leadership Atlanta Class of 2023 at Covenant House on September 19 with HomeAid Atlanta Board President Tony Albachiara of Ashton Woods Homes (left) and HomeAid Atlanta Executive Director Mandy Crater (right).
HomeAid Atlanta has been selected to partner with Leadership Atlanta on a Community Leadership Project for its Class of 2023!

The goal of the project is to create ways for residential builders and municipalities to work together to build a future without homelessness in metro Atlanta through affordable housing. We had a great first meeting on September 19 at Covenant House (photo above), plus toured Park Vue, an Ashton Woods development with an affordable component. We are so excited for this nine-month partnership and look forward to discovering affordable housing solutions together!

Leadership Atlanta partners with approximately eight metro Atlanta nonprofit organizations as Community Leadership Project partners each year. Community Leadership Projects aim to provide a civic engagement opportunity for class members. The goal of the project is for each group to collectively learn about and address a critical community need while providing value-added support and consultation to a local nonprofit in achieving its mission.
