Help Found a New Era of Youth Civic Participation - Sign the Declaration!
|
|
Youth Service America (YSA) believes that young people, communities, and democracy thrive when we all work together for the common good. We're on a mission to make working together for the common good the common expectation and common experience of every young person in America.
Even though youth participation rates are at or near record-high levels, we’re still leaving 3 of every 4 young people out of actively working together for the common good. Our work is focused on increasing youth participation rates in volunteering and service, voting and civic engagement, and joining and leadership to 50% by America250 on July 4, 2026, on the way to 100% a decade later so that no one is left out of participating in our democracy. The Declaration of Participation states:
Nearly two and a half centuries ago, America was founded with a Declaration that each of us has the right to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness. We know that young people are crucial to the Common Good, both now and in the future. Therefore, we hold these truths to be self-evident:
That all young people are created equal and that our unalienable rights come with inherent responsibilities to participate and work together for the Common Good, among these are volunteering & service, voting & civic engagement, and joining & leadership.
That to support young people in meeting these responsibilities, the Nation’s institutions must be organized to eliminate the barriers to youth participation including limited opportunities to participate, a lack of knowledge & skills, equity and opportunity gaps in access and resources, and a need for increased inspiration, aspiration, and connection to community.
Let these beliefs and commitments be submitted to the world...

Everyday Young Heroes: Seena Farhadi
|
Having been a student in the Mount Diablo Unified School District since elementary school, Seena Farhadi (17 | Walnut Creek, California) began to notice the educational gap that existed between students in different parts of the district: while some schools were located in more affluent areas, others were in predominantly lower income and resource-scarce parts of the county, contributing to an imbalance of access to academic-related materials and support. This was especially noticeable for the more than 700 students who were in foster care or unhoused. As a first-generation American, Seena saw how many systemic obstacles lead immigrants and refugees to homelessness and unstable financial conditions and began to think about the many services offered by his high school, but the majority of those receiving support from the district’s Homeless Outreach Program for Education (HOPE) lacked.
In January 2021, Seena founded Learning Enrichment and Assistance Program (LEAP) to close that gap by supporting students who are in foster care or are unhoused through academic programming and resource provisions. Working with the district’s HOPE and Foster Youth Services, Seena identifies which students are in need of tutoring, recruits high school volunteers, and pairs them for one-on-one sessions throughout the year. When he began recruiting volunteers, Seema had an overwhelming response—in just a few days, nearly 40 high schoolers from across the district signed up to participate!
Outside of LEAP’s robust tutoring program, Seena has also hosted a two-week enrichment camp for students who are unhoused focusing on high school and college preparedness. With the support of groups like Rotary, Build-A-Bear Foundation, Riley’s Way and individual donors, Seena and his team have been able to donate hygiene items, stuffed animals, and gift cards to youth who are unhoused in the Bay Area. Almost all students enrolled in the program have seen a noticeable increase in their grade point averages. The program has also boosted participation and engagement in academic studies, as the tutors act as a support line for students, so they feel empowered rather than helpless.

"America The Beautiful" - Ray Charles
|
"Oh beautiful, for heroes proved
In liberating strife
Who more than self, our country loved
And mercy more than life
America, America, may God thy gold refine
Till all success be nobleness
And every gain divined
...
But now wait a minute, I'm talking about
America, sweet America
You know, God done shed his grace on thee
He crowned thy good, yes he did,
in a brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!"
