Simple Down to Earth Financial Advice

Help Protect Your Financial Identity:

Credit Freezes

In today’s environment, protecting your personal and financial information is more important than ever. One of the most effective—and often overlooked—tools available to you is a credit freeze.

A credit freeze (also called a security freeze) restricts access to your credit report, making it much harder for identity thieves to open new accounts in your name. Since most lenders require access to your credit report before approving credit, a freeze acts as a strong barrier against fraudulent activity.

Key Benefits of a Credit Freeze:

  • Helps prevent unauthorized credit accounts from being opened
  • Does not affect your credit score
  • Is free to set up with all major credit bureaus
  • Can be lifted temporarily or permanently at any time

Important Considerations:

  • A credit freeze does not stop fraud on existing accounts, so continue monitoring your statements regularly
  • You will need to “unfreeze” your credit before applying for loans, mortgages, or credit cards
  • Each credit bureau must be contacted individually

How to Set Up a Credit Freeze:

You can place a freeze online, by phone, or by mail with each of the three major credit bureaus:

  • Equifax
  • Experian
  • TransUnion

The process is straightforward and typically takes only a few minutes per bureau. Once completed, you will receive a PIN or password to manage your freeze when needed.

When Should You Consider It?

A credit freeze is especially valuable if you:

  • Have experienced identity theft or a data breach
  • Have lost personal documents
  • Want to take a proactive step in safeguarding your financial identity

As part of your overall financial plan, protecting your credit profile is just as important as growing your assets. If you have questions about whether a credit freeze is right for you, feel free to reach out—we are here to help.
