Telephus spurge (Euphorbia telephioides) is a rare plant found only in Florida’s Panhandle, limited to Bay, Franklin and Gulf counties. Federally threatened and state-endangered, it grows in coastal pine flatwoods and scrub, with succulent leaves and tuberous roots that help it survive sandy soils and drought.
Despite its resilience, it faces growing threats from habitat loss due to development, fire suppression and fragmentation. One population along a roadside slated for widening is at immediate risk. Without action, it could be lost. Supporting FDOT’s efforts to relocate these plants to nearby conservation lands can help protect this unique species and preserve Florida’s coastal biodiversity.
