Dear Supporters, Educators, and Advocates,

On Monday, February 10, the federal government eliminated funding for We the People: Civics that Empowers All Students, cutting a program that engages over 17,000 students and 310 teachers across 34 states and D.C, including Virginia. This decision directly impacts Virginia Civics’s ability to support and train teachers in We the People and empower students with the knowledge they need to be informed, engaged citizens.

This grant enabled Virginia Civics to provide high-quality professional development in the We the People curriculum to educators across the Commonwealth. With its support, we were able to supply teachers with classroom sets of textbooks, connect them with constitutional scholars, volunteer in classrooms to assist with implementation, and provide mentorship from experienced educators. Without this funding, our ability to equip teachers and inspire the next generation of informed and engaged citizens is at risk.

We need your voice. If We the People has impacted you, please consider contacting your representatives to urge them to fight to restore funding for the We the People: Civics that Empowers All Students grant. The Center for Civic Education has created a letter template that you may use to support this effort. If you’d rather not reach out directly, please share your impact stories with us—we will use them as we fight for this critical program. And please forward this email to others who might be inspired to act—educators, administrators, We the People alumni, students, parents, community leaders, anyone. When we raise our voices together, we can make a difference that echoes for generations.

Democracy depends on an educated citizenry—and it depends on us all doing our part. Let’s stand together to protect civic education in Virginia.

Sincerely,
