Program Highlight: Soulful Seniors – Growing Food and Connections

Spring is here, and exciting things are blooming in the garden! As the weather warms up, we’re thrilled to welcome guests back for another season of meaningful programs and volunteer opportunities. This year is shaping up to be especially memorable.

One program we’re particularly proud of is Soulful Seniors, which we introduced last year. Designed as a special volunteer day for seniors, their friends, and family, this initiative fosters connection and community in a beautiful outdoor setting.

Join us every Friday from 9:30 to 11 a.m., starting April 4th, for a morning filled with gardening, learning, and companionship. Whether you’re getting your hands dirty for the first time or sharing your gardening wisdom with others, there’s a place for everyone. This intergenerational opportunity is perfect for exchanging favorite recipes, making new friends, and working together to help reduce food insecurity in our community.

No experience is needed—just a willingness to dig in, learn, and enjoy the countless benefits of being in the garden. Feel free to drop in, and let’s grow something wonderful together!

2025 Garden Kick-off Public Volunteer Days with UNR Extension Master Gardener’s Help Desk 

When: Saturday April 5th from 9 am - 12 pm

Where: Soulful Seeds Garden at Our Place 

Get ready to roll up your sleeves and dig into the 2025 garden season! On Saturday, April 5th, we’re kicking things off at our Soulful Seeds Garden on the Our Place Campus, and we’d love for you to join us. This is the perfect opportunity to lend a hand, connect with fellow community members, and get inspired for the season ahead.

We’re thrilled to have the UNR Extension Master Gardeners on site. They’ll be hosting a help desk offering their expert advice on all things gardening.

No experience is needed—just bring your curiosity, energy, and perhaps a pair of gloves. Let’s get our hands dirty and kick off the season together! 

NEW Educational Program: Jueves en el Jardín- ¡Clases en español!

When: Thursday April 10 from 5:30 pm to 7pm

¡Únete a nosotros los jueves en el jardín!

Junto con los Washoe County Master Gardeners, te invitamos a unirte a nosotros cada segundo jueves en el jardín de Soulful Seed en el campus de Our Place a las 5:30pm. El grupo se reúne el segundo jueves de cada mes de abril a agosto. Aprenda a cultivar un huerto, haga nuevos amigos y ayude a Soulful Seeds a cultivar alimentos saludables para los vecinos necesitados. Cada mes, un maestro jardinero enseñará diferentes temas según las necesidades del jardín. Enseñaremos todas las lecciones de jardinería en español. Damos la bienvenida a hablantes nativos, estudiantes de segundos idiomas y jardineros de todos los niveles. ¡Ven a aprender, compartir y crecer con nosotras!

Saint Mary’s Garden Kick-off Public Volunteer Day

When: Saturday April 12 from 1 pm - 3 pm

Where: Soulful Seeds Garden at Saint Mary’s

We’ll be planting, weeding, and sprucing up the garden to get it ready for the growing season. It’s a great chance to meet new friends, soak up some sunshine, and contribute to our mission of growing food and community connection. No experience is needed—just bring your energy and enthusiasm (and maybe a hat just in case we get lovely spring sun).

Peek Family Charitable Foundation

The Peek Family Charitable Foundation was established to create lasting impact in our community. The Foundation focuses on quality of life improvements, open space and trail improvements, enhanced outdoor opportunities, and scholarships.

With support from the Peek Family Charitable Foundation, Soulful Seeds has been able to build capacity to serve neighbors on the Our Place Campus. This includes expanding the amount of growing space on campus, creating more educational programs in the garden for people living on campus, and creating more opportunities for people to improve the quality of their life through our workforce development programs.
