Contribute Your Ideas to Under the Lens
Hi ,

By some counts, 15 percent of the world’s population is disabled. With long COVID, many more people are being added to the ranks, with no sign of ending anytime soon. What do we find when we take a disability justice lens to the question of accessible and affordable housing?

In 2023, Shelterforce intends to examine various aspects of this topic, such as:
  • Tenant organizing in supportive housing buildings.
  • Private equity takeovers of supportive housing.
  • Building healthy homes for those with sensory and chemical sensitivities.
  • How asset caps on SSI keep people out of homeownership.
  • NIMBYism against group homes and supportive housing.
  • How fair housing relates to temporary shelter.
  • Advances in accessible design and retrofits—and special long COVID accommodations.
  • Transportation, housing location, and disability—when being on a transit line really matters.
  • New models for independent living and community care.
  • When all you can afford is to be institutionalized even though you could live on your own.

If you or someone you know is working on any of the topics above, or if you have relevant experience or know someone who does, please let us know by Oct. 15 by emailing [email protected] and [email protected].

Thank you!
