We're Almost There...
Help Us Reach $1 Million!
|
|
Why is our
One Justice Chicago
vision of universal attorney access so important? Because o
ur entire community benefits when we put the client first.
As part of our anniversary, our legal and business partners have responded to our mission by raising more than
90
%
of our $1 million Golden Gavel Celebration goal so far. This monumental success marks a watershed moment in recognizing that an attorney consultation is the cornerstone of access to justice.
We also want to highlight Kirkland & Ellis, LLP, one of our Marquee Anniversary Sponsors this year. They are an important part of CARPLS' development
—
from Ken Morrison, Kirkland Partner, who drafted our Articles of Incorporation to the varied pro bono projects and incredibly generous financial support and outstanding board leadership they have demonstrated over the years.
"It's been an honor to be a part of this forward-thinking organization that is promoting important work in the community," said Mike Slade, Partner at Kirkland & Ellis and CARPLS Board Member. "We are very proud to support CARPLS' mission of everyday justice for everyday people."

2019 Golden Gavel Celebration Honorees
|
|
Cameron Findlay
, Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of Archer Daniels Midland Company, will be honored with the Golden Gavel Award at the celebration.
The Golden Gavel Award recognizes individuals, law firms and corporations that make significant contributions to further the mission of CARPLS to provide access to justice for all.
Cam has emphasized the importance of giving back through his commitment to pro bono work in all of his corporate leadership positions. He
was a driving force in multiple companies making pro bono a permanent part of their programs which are now well reputed in the legal community. This included
establishing pro bono programs at Aon, Medtronic and most recently ADM. Personally, Cam has handled a number of pro bono matters, even while serving as general counsel, including a conviction appeal, an employment claim, and a case for a client seeking post-conviction relief. In April 2019, ADM lawyers from across several offices will partner with Skadden to conduct a day-of-service for various legal aid clinics.
In addition, Cam serves on the boards of Northwestern University and Steppenwolf Theatre.
Cam’s distinguished career includes government service, as the Deputy Assistant to President George H. W. Bush, Deputy U.S. Secretary of Labor, U.S. Supreme Court law clerk for Justice Antonin Scalia, and law clerk for D.C. Circuit Judge Stephen F. Williams.

Harold called CARPLS after learning that the condo he was renting, without a written lease, had gone into foreclosure.
He was completely befuddled by the various notices that he received, and he didn't know who to contact or what to do.
The CARPLS hotline attorneys helped him understand his legal rights, and one of our court help desk attorneys drafted a motion to ensure the client had enough time to move out of the apartment. Harold said, "You have provided me with accurate and timely advice. CARPLS has consistently delivered exactly what I needed, when I needed it. I have told many friends and neighbors about my experience with this truly invaluable service and recommended they contact you should the need arise. Keep up the great work!"

Everyday Justice Blog: Salvaged Car Titles
|
|
Staff Attorney Mary Jo Rosso discusses the dirty secret in DIY car titles
Joe thought he got a deal when he purchased a salvaged-title car on an auction website from a registered broker. He needed the vehicle to get to work across town, an improvement over the long commutes he was taking via public transportation at all hours of the night. When the police pulled him over for failing to signal, he was shocked when he was told that there was no registration for his car in his name and that the license plates were fake. He received a ticket for his moving violation and his car was impounded.
Joe comes to the CARPLS desk at the City of Chicago Department of Administrative Hearings and wants to get his car back, but he has to prove that he actually owns it. In these cases, the City doesn’t see Joe as the owner. And, if Joe proves he is the owner, he will owe thousands of dollars in fees at usually no fault of his own. He needs a car, but he can’t afford to reclaim the one he thought he rightfully owned, and right now, buying another car will be very difficult.
We are seeing more catch-22 cases like these at the advice desk at the City of Chicago Department of Administrative Hearings. Often, we recommend that clients decide if they should show ownership and be liable or just walk away from an unwinnable situation.
