“A 'non-profit' institution’s product is a changed human being. Non-profit institutions are human-change agents. Their 'product' is a cured patient, a child that learns, a young man or woman grown into a self-respecting adult; a changed human life altogether.”
― Peter F. Drucker,
Greetings!
On Aug. 17, 1894 the Tariff Act was signed into law, which included exemptions for nonprofit organizations and charitable institutions. Today, we observe Aug. 17 as National Nonprofit Day to acknowledge the positive impact that nonprofit organizations have on our local communities and around the world.

This August you can support SAHARA in many ways:
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
SAHARA is looking for 25 extraordinary individuals for a special team - you may qualify.
  • Are you focused and well-organized?
  • Do you care about your community?
  • Does getting a free ticket to the most happening gala of the year excite you?
  • Are you fun, outgoing, and love to smile?
  • Would you enjoy mouth-watering South Asian food from one of the best restaurants in the area?
  • Do you want to be a part of a 28-year-old organization that has worked tirelessly to help the South Asian Community?
If you answered yes to all these questions, then we would love for you to join the Valued Volunteer Team for SAHARA's 28th Annual Gala, "Empowering Our Community" on Sept. 14th, 2019. Preparation and training begin in August.
THANK YOU!
SAHARA would like to thank Joy Sharing Foundation and Karina’s Backpack project for donating backpacks full of school supplies and food items for our clients and their families.

The mission of the Joy of Sharing Foundation is to support the local community in Southern California by helping build bridges and providing services to address the local needs. Karina's Backpack Project is an annual community-based event that offers elementary and middle school students supplies, resources and services for a successful school year.

Help us, help the community!
FUN FACT!
In the original Roman calendar, the month of August was called Sextilis. This was because it was the sixth month of the year. Later, after January and February were added to the calendar, it became the eighth month of the year. At the time the month had 29 days. When Julius Caesar created the Julian calendar in 45 BC, two days were added giving the month 31 days. The month was later renamed Augustus in honor of the first emperor of Rome, Caesar Augustus .
JOB OPPORTUNITY: GRANT WRITER/MANAGER!
SAHARA is currently seeking a Grant Writer, responsible for relationships with foundations whose missions are in alignment with SAHARA’s – improving the lives of survivors of gender-based abuse, domestic violence, elder abuse; achieving social justice on their behalf; and developing young leaders to shape a healthier and more just community.
SAHARA'S SOUL STORIES
SAHARA would like to dedicate this edition of the newsletter to Mrs. Kanta Bera for her numerous contributions to the community and her dedication to serve others.
When we first met Mr. Bera a couple of weeks ago, the thing that struck us the most was his warm smile and the way his eyes lit up when he talked about his late wife, Kanta. It was such a joy talking to him and getting to know his wife through his words.
“Kanta, you were my wife, partner in life, an excellent advisor to our sons, and other family members, source of wisdom to all our five grandchildren and you spread love and happiness everywhere you went. You lived a life that was full of abundant love and respect from all those around you. I feel absolutely lucky and blessed that I got to experience life with you by my side.“
