Happiest Man on Earth: How a Habitat Home Changed a Life
Mr. Holmes, 72, says he is one of the happiest people on earth. “You may find millions of people who have more money, but you won’t find anyone happier,” he said.
One of the things that makes Quentin happy is his Habitat home, which he purchased in 1998 and paid off in 2018. Growing up in a Habitat home greatly benefited the daughter and grandson he raised there, he said. “It affects their whole attitude when they can have trusting, stable relationships with other kids in a community.”
Although he had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis 10 years before he entered the Habitat program, he never let the disease slow him down. It did not stop him from helping to build his own home and those of other Habitat families. He still works nearly every day as a security guard and a part-time newspaper carrier. Now that he no longer has mortgage payments, he contributes money to a 529 college savings plan for two younger grandchildren.
“Habitat is a tremendous program and I am very grateful for it. Being a single dad, it would have devastated me financially to try to pay on a traditional mortgage. I am just so thankful to be here.”
