Help us win the fight against hunger

This is the last week for food fight donations! Help us finish strong!

The Third Annual Ulster Country Food Fight food collection contest wraps up this coming Saturday, Oct. 15, with a goal of re-stocking food pantries across the county. Fourteen Ulster County libraries are participating, including Wallkill.

You can donate unexpired, non-perishable items like canned goods, pasta, breakfast cereal, and peanut butter to the library, and we'll deliver them to our local food pantry, The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, here in the hamlet. The library that collects the most items for donation wins the Food Fight and receives a certificate. Last year, libraries were able to collect 4,678 items. This year our collective goal is 6,000 items, but we need your help! Search your shelves, toss the expired stuff, and donate what you can to this excellent cause!

Great Give Back focuses on recycling

Each year, The Great Give Back gives library users opportunities to participate in service-oriented and meaningful programs, workshops, and events. This year, Wallkill’s event will center around recycling.

The library is partnering with the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency to present a primer on all things involving recycling, with a goal of improving the recycling process to better help the environment. Putting unaccepted items in a recycling bin can damage equipment, harm workers, and create inefficiencies in the recycling process. The workshop will answer such questions as:

  • Why can’t all plastics be recycled?
  • What does the chasing arrows symbol mean?
  • Are pizza boxes and coffee cups recyclable?
  • How does recycling work in Ulster County?
  • What is “wishcycling” and how does contamination affect recycling?

Come into the library and pick up some informative materials from the UCRRA about recycling best practices. When you visit, drop off those old, dead batteries cluttering up your junk drawer. The library has a collection box to recycle old batteries.

Register soon for Recycle Right, which takes place at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Fiction Club’s October selection is a classic

The Fiction Club will meet to discuss As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 27. Newcomers are always welcome!

As I Lay Dying is Faulkner’s harrowing account of the Bundren family’s odyssey across the Mississippi countryside to bury Addie, their wife and mother. Narrated in turn by each of the family members -- including Addie herself -- as well as others; the novel ranges in mood, from dark comedy to the deepest pathos. Considered one of the most influential novels in American fiction in structure, style, and drama, As I Lay Dying is a true 20th-century classic.

Join us to discuss this slim but weighty volume!

Play mahjong on Wednesdays and Thursdays

The library’s Wednesday mahjong group continues to meet at 1 p.m. each week, but for those of you who would like to play and are only free during the evenings, Thursdays evenings from 6-8 p.m. might be a better fit for you!

You don’t have to be an expert – all skill levels are always welcome in both groups. The library has its own game sets and cards, so no need to come with your own supplies, either! Registration is not required to play.

From Miss Michelle

We have been keeping busy during these crisp fall days here in the Children’s Room!

We learned about the seasonal migration of butterflies, and made cool tees to commemorate the event, with our special guest, Mr. Jerry “The Butterfly Guy.”

We also combined kindness with sensory science at STEM - we stacked non-perishables into different shapes and then donated the canned goods to the Ulster County Food Fight!

And we made dolls… out of cattails… with Mr. Alex from SUNY New Paltz!

For those who participated in the Lego contest at the Weekend of Wallkill, you all did an amazing job! Completed projects are on display in the Children’s Room at the library (in the yellow dot section). Please feel free to pick up your project during library hours.

Speaking of kindness, don’t forget to enter our “Kindness is my Superpower” raffle! Through 10/15/22, share how we can be kind and helpful to others by filling out a card in the Children’s Room, or by emailing Miss Michelle at mgreco@rcls.org, for a chance to win some delicious Stewart’s ice cream!

Weekly children's programming

Our regular fall programming is in full swing with Storytime on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30 AM and Little Explorers STEM & Sensory on Wednesdays at 11:00 AM.

And a little reminder for our young craft-loving friends that we now have Crafting Caboodles in-person on Tuesdays at 11:00 AM, or you can sign-up for Miss Michelle's Take-and-Make Craft instead (sign-up by Tuesday to pick-up your craft by Thursday of the same week).
