How to Become an Advocate to Help Detroit

If you are concerned about something happening in your neighborhood, do you know what you can do about it?

We heard that people want to learn more about how to protect their communities, reduce harm, improve health, and contribute to the decision-making process. So we developed a training to educate people about how to advocate for themselves and their community.

We are developing a senior-driven advocacy program titled, "Senior Advocates and Guardians of our Environment" (SAGE) in Detroit. The Center for Urban Responses to Environmental Stressors (CURES) has worked to help Detroiters participate in decision-making about their neighborhoods and the city.

Older Americans Month

May is Older Americans month, and World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) is just two weeks later on June 15. From May through June 15, CFPB will spotlight tools and resources that can help older adults achieve and maintain financial well-being. Topics will include financial caregiving, housing decisions, planning for retirement, online and mobile banking tips, and elder financial exploitation. Watch the video below to hear more .

Help with Funeral Expenses

If you lost a loved one to Covid-19, you could receive government money for funeral expenses.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will pay up to $9,000 for funeral expenses for loved ones who died of Covid-19. Survivors can apply by contacting FEMA, toll-free, at 844-684-6333. To see if you qualify, read FEMA’s Funeral Assistance FAQs.

Unfortunately, scammers are falsely offering to register people for assistance. Don't be duped. Remember:
  • FEMA will not contact you until you call or apply for assistance.
  • The government won’t ask you to pay anything to get this benefit.
  • Don’t give your own or your deceased loved one’s personal or financial information to anyone who contacts you out of the blue.

If you think you got a scam call, hang up and report it to the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 or the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
