April 2020 Program Updates
The health and safety of you, your staff, your customers, and their tenants are of utmost importance to the SoCalREN team. Following State and local guidance, the SoCalREN Multifamily Program has currently paused all field activities (such as onsite assessments and inspections) through May 15, 2020.

The SoCalREN Program team is still available to assist you by phone or email regarding customer scopes of work, program guidelines, status updates, training, assessment reports, and much more. We are also currently collecting signed Property Owner Agreements and utility bills for any properties that are interested in participating once field activities resume. Direct support for these activities is available by contacting your Account Manager.

We hope that you, your families, and colleagues are all doing well and staying safe during these unpredictable times.

Technical Tips
The SoCalREN team is here to support you in moving projects closer to securing incentives and entering construction once field activities resume. In addition to collecting your project’s enrollment documentation (including the Property Owner Agreement, utility bills, etc.), we have developed a set of questions regarding existing equipment at the property site that can be answered by maintenance personnel; this information can help guide development of the Scope of Work for your retrofit project.
We can work with you and your customer’s maintenance personnel to complete the interim questionnaire describing the site’s existing equipment and new installment options. We are happy to facilitate this with a conference call at a time convenient for you and your customer. Here is an overview of the information we will be asking for:

  • Description of the property including the number of buildings, year built, renovation year(s), fuel type, floors above and below ground, etc.

  • Description of common areas such as leasing office, gym, clubhouse, pool/spa, laundry and/or garages, etc.

  • Description of dwelling units, including the number of apartments per building and unit configuration types with square feet.

  • Information on previous energy efficiency improvements at the property including what was finished and the date it was completed. 

  • Information on equipment in need of immediate replacement.

  • Potential start and end dates to ensure an accurate construction timeline.

  • A point of contact for further discussion regarding project scope, confirmation of budget available for improvements, and potential incentives available for energy efficiency retrofit projects.
SoCalREN Energy Efficiency Learning Center 
The SoCalREN Energy Efficiency Learning Center (EELC) is now available for you and your staff to take e-learning courses at your convenience from the comfort and safety of home. The EELC offers a growing catalog of courses in a variety of categories, including HVAC, Sales and Marketing, and Commercial Energy Efficiency. In addition, Building Performance Institute (BPI), Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) and North American Technician Excellence (NATE) Continuing Education Unit (CEU)-accredited courses are currently housed in the EELC. Currently, there are more than 80 active courses available, including the following:

Building Science
  • Basics of Building Science

  • Combustion Safety

  • Zone Pressure Diagnostics

  • HVAC for Non-Technical Staff

  • HVAC Equipment Energy Usage: Charge Levels Refrigerant Leaks

Marketing and Sales
  • Your Marketing Plan

  • Customer Personality Types

The SoCalREN EELC is available to you at no cost as a participating SoCalREN Contractor. To access these courses, please email the SoCalREN team , and we will create a login for you and any staff members interested in taking advantage of this SoCalREN program benefit.
Helpful Information for Small Businesses During COVID-19
  • Resilience Toolkits for Los Angeles Businesses are helping small businesses impacted by COVID-19. Small business resources and relief are rapidly coming online and will continue to do so from the city, state and federal government. Learn more here.

  • State and Federal agencies are offering emergency assistance for small businesses. Check out the links below for the latest news:
  • The U.S. SBA is offering loans of up to $2 million in assistance to cover a temporary loss of revenue. To apply, visit the U.S. Small Business Administration website.
