Helpful Tips for Proposal and Budget Planning

As summer is approaching very quickly, here is a helpful reminder for Summer Researchers: When budgeting for summer salary, there are two different fringe benefit rates to consider which depend on the total level of summer effort. The Payroll Activity Code determines how the fringe is calculated so please work with the Administrative Assistant for your College and the HR Finance Coordinator to ensure the payroll activity code reflects the correct rate of effort.

Option 1: Budget using the fringe rate of 29.9% which includes summer earnings retirement eligible (more than > 50% effort of the summer) -  Payroll Activity Code: L026 - UNLV - Flat Amount - Summer Research (Retirement Eligible).

or

Option 2: Budget using 2.6% which includes summer earnings non-retirement eligible (less than < 50% effort of the summer)  -  Payroll Activity Code:  L006 - UNLV - Flat Amount - Research.

Please keep in mind that if you are teaching and performing summer research your total effort may put you over 50% and become retirement eligible and therefore your budget and payroll activity code will need to be changed.  If you are unsure that you may exceed the 50% over summer due to instruction and/or research efforts, it is best for you to budget at the full fringe rate to ensure you have allocated enough funding.
