We are saddened by the passing of

Sister Becky Ryan

It is with extreme sadness that we share that Reverend Rebekah Ryan (aka Sister Becky Ryan) passed away peacefully on September 5 surrounded by her family.

Sister Becky dedicated her life to helping others. She treated everyone as equals and with grace and dignity. She had the biggest heart and always made room for others in her life. To say that she truly loved everyone was an understatement. Sister Becky never met a stranger and had a unique way of seeing right into a person's soul and loved each and every person just as they were.

Throughout her life she helped so many people in many different ways, whether it was a kind heart to acknowledge them or a compassionate ear to listen or feed them a meal or offering them a place to sleep. Her legacy and memory will live on through Becky's Place. We will honor her by continuing her work, just the way she intended.

Mother Creates New Start with her Children

Katie* came to Becky's Place Shelter in April after a recommendation from her Department of Children's Services (DCS) Case Worker. She had an open case with them due to extensive drug use, mental illness, and neglect.

During her stay, she found employment and started saving her money. She applied for housing and was accepted at Clover Park Apartments in July. She worked with both her Becky’s Place and DCS Case Workers to achieve her goals. Katie started at home visits with her children and also began therapy with her children to work on reunification.

Becky's Place helped Katie with setting up her apartment so that she and both of her daughters could be comfortable. We also provided school supplies for the children. Katie stated that this will be the very first year she will be able to be involved in the children going to school and has high hopes that this is the start of a wonderful life together with her daughters.

Summer Cooking Program Helps

Residents Learn Life Skills

This summer Becky's Place hosted “Cooking with JJ.” This program was provided by Purdue Extension Nutrition Education Program. J.J. Goldsberry came to the shelter weekly to teach residents about nutrition and preparing food that is both healthy and quick to prepare. Residents also learned a lot of practical information like planning menus, using what is in our cupboards, how coupons can help save money. These are all important life lessons that residents can use after they leave Becky's Place.

Qualified Charitable Distrubtions

Do you own an IRA? Are you 70 ½ or older? Maximize your giving impact and personal tax benefits at the same time! Consider supporting your favorite parish, school, or agency through an IRA qualified charitable distribution (QCD) gift.

For those eligible, this is often the most tax-advantageous way to charitably give each year, even if you don’t itemize:

  • Tax-free giving – directly from your IRA to your favorite Church ministries (up to $100,000/year)
  • Count towards RMD - satisfy your required minimum distribution for the year (for those 73+)
  • Lower taxable income – even if you don’t itemize deductions, as QCDs don’t count as income
  • Planned giving - conducive to annual giving all-at-once or strategically throughout the year
