Horizon Grant Allows RSDM to Provide More Care to Underserved Children

RSDM will provide screenings, oral healthcare education and dental sealants to about 1,000 underserved school children from Essex County, thanks to funding from the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey. The foundation awarded RSDM a grant of $62,500, which will be used in part to pay for bus transportation from schools to the RSDM's clinic in Newark. The funding is part of Horizon's Kids' Oral Health Program, which supplies monies to school and community-based programs statewide.   LEARN MORE

Caring for Patients, Student NavigatesTurning Point

Greg Ramirez
Greg Ramirez remembers the day it dawned on him that patients looked to him for expert advice -- and he was ready to give it.
"My first big case was a patient who had severe periodontal disease. He needed a full mouth extraction and when I saw him on a subsequent visit, he was a little teary-eyed. He asked me if he did the right thing,'' recalls Ramirez, one of many dedicated RSDM students who are improving the lives of patients. "I was a new dentist and I thought, 'You're asking ME?' I told him his teeth were deteriorating quickly and there wasn't much else he could do, and he seemed reassured. I realized you need to be confident when you're dealing with patients because they rely on you.''

Faculty Member Studies Link Between Dementia and Dental Disease
Dr. Gang Yue

Dr. Gang Yue's research on the link between periodontal disease and dementia had a big impact last year, according to the editors of Gerodontology, a journal that focuses on research about oral health and the elderly.Yue's paper on the subject was among the most frequently cited article in the journal last year. "Your work generated immediate impact and visibility, contributing significantly to the advancement in your field,'' stated the editors LEARN MORE

Staff, faculty and students paid tribute to three African-American dental pioneers today for Black History Month. They honored American's first Black dentist, Robert Tanner Freeman, Jessie Gideon Garnett, Boston's first Black woman dentist, and Earl Renfroe, an innovative Black orthodontist who is considered the father of orthodontics in Brazil. Scholarship Challenge Offers 2-1 and 1-1 Matches

This year, the Chancellor's Challenge is offering $500,000 in matching donations toward any RSDM scholarship received until December. All scholarship donations will be matched 1-1 or 2-1. LEARN MORE

Save the Date for Annual Hockey Benefit

The annual benefit hockey game between  Rutgers New Jersey Medical School  and RSDM is on April 5 at the Prudential Center in Newark. But it's not too early to support a good cause. This year, the event will raise funds for the Child Health Institute of New Jersey Support Fund. The institute's mission is to understand childhood diseases and translate research discoveries into prevention, treatment and cure. Donate here.
