Pay Attention When Routines Begin to Change

As the days become shorter and temperatures cool, older adults may spend more time indoors and become less active or socially connected. October is a good time to check whether seasonal changes are affecting a loved one’s daily routine.

A few things to watch for:

🍽️ Meals being skipped or less interest in cooking

🚶 Less movement or activity throughout the day

💬 Decreased social interaction or increased isolation

📅 Missed appointments, medications, or usual routines

🏠 Everyday household tasks becoming more difficult

Small changes don’t always mean something is wrong, but patterns are worth noticing. A conversation, an adjustment to the daily routine, or a little additional support at home may be all that’s needed.

The goal isn’t to take over, it’s to provide the right support so independence can continue.

Checking in now can help families recognize changing needs early and make thoughtful decisions before a small concern becomes a bigger challenge.

Cooler Weather and Mature Skin

As the air turns cooler, mature skin may feel drier, tighter, or more sensitive. Lower humidity, indoor heat, and frequent handwashing can all make skin feel less comfortable during the fall and winter months.

A few gentle habits can help. Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, choose warm, not hot, showers, and apply moisturizer while the skin is still slightly damp. Hands, elbows, legs, feet, and lips may need extra attention, so keeping lotion and lip balm nearby can make daily care easier.

For seniors, skincare is about more than appearance. It supports comfort, confidence, and feeling cared for. Family members and caregivers can help by offering choices, using gentle touch, and watching for redness, cracking, bruising, wounds, or irritation.

Cooler weather may change what skin needs, but it can also be a reminder to slow down, add comfort, and create small moments of care that help older adults feel refreshed, protected, and radiant

Glow Tip of the Month: Moisturize right after bathing.

After a warm shower or bath, gently pat the skin dry and apply moisturizer while the skin is still slightly damp. This simple habit can help mature skin feel softer, calmer, and more comfortable through the cooler months.

Preparing for a Safe and Healthy Fall Season

As temperatures cool and the days grow shorter, fall is a great time to take a fresh look at the routines and surroundings that help you or your loved one stay safe and comfortable at home. A few simple seasonal changes can make everyday life easier while helping you continue doing the things you enjoy.

Start by looking around the home for anything that could become a safety concern. Make sure frequently used walkways are well-lit and free of clutter. Watch for items that could cause a slip, such as a loose rug, and keep everyday items within easy reach. During this season in particular, falling leaves and changing weather can make porches, steps, and walkways more difficult to walk through. Keeping these outdoor areas clear and dry helps reduce hazards. If you notice an area of concern, please communicate these needs with your caregiver.

Additionally, if you notice new challenges with mobility, daily routines or other activities at home, be sure to share those concerns with your Care Manager. Open communication helps us understand what you or your loved one is experiencing and identify ways to provide the right support as needs change.

As the season changes, small adjustments can make all the difference. Keeping in touch with your care team can help make those transitions throughout the year safer, especially when heading into the cooler months.
